I'm wondering about donut shops and pharmacies, of which there's
this vast proliferation in my part of the world, with Dunkin'
Donuts and CVS on what seems to be every block. In the former
case, they just build franchises cheek by jowl; in the latter,
there's some of that but also the mass purchase of other
drugstores and rebranding.

Makes my head hurt.

 But only if the second line is or at least is perceived to

Or they might conceivably have a situation such as the Coke
vs. New Coke debacle/triumph.

Of course, New Coke was designed to replace Old Coke but was
perceived as inferior and eventually died off, being itself
replaced by Old Coke made with HFCS. Which earned increased
market share, but why is open to lots of discussion.

What about the Wegmans product lines as described by Nancy, though
advertising isn't a factor there.

But if they behave like many of today's stockholders, they might

Brownies
cat: dessert, chocolate
yield: 16

1 2/3 c powdered sugar
2/3 c all-purpose flour
1/4 c cocoa pwdr
1 pn salt
3/4 ts baking powder
2 1/2 Tb canola oil
1 1/2 oz unsweetened chocolate
2 Tb corn syrup
1/2 ts coffee powder
- dissolved in 1/2 Tb water
2 ts vanilla
2 egg whites
2 Tb pecans, toasted - sub walnuts

Sift together powdered sugar, flour, salt, and baking
powder. Heat oil and unsweetened chocolate together.

Add in corn syrup, coffee, and vanilla. Mix dry
ingredients with wet. Stir together. (Mix will be
very thick.) Line an 8" square pan with aluminum foil.
Bake in a preheated 350F oven for 20-25 min.
