Arsenic isn't nearly as poisonous as a lot of other substances.

It takes 100 milligrams (mg) to kill a 100 kg person out right,
although there are long term detrimental health effects at lesser
amounts, including potassium uptake and balance problems leading to
heart attacks and strokes and various cancers especially of the
pancreas.

The human body contains arsenic, about a third as much as it does
iodine, which is a trace element vital to life and health..

Food everywhere contains arsenic. So does soil, so does water.

Food levels average 1 microgram (æg) per kg or 1 ppb. The main
sources are rice, grain, bottled water, coffee, beer, fish and
vegetables.

The very conservative EPA TDI (tolerable daily intake) is 1 æg/kg
bw (body weight)/day. So for me, 100 æg. It takes three times that
much to get the smallest statistical uptick on cancer incidence.

The WHO sets levels of 10 ppb for safe drinking water. 4 litres
consumed daily - 40 æg.

The Canadian Water Quality Guideline is 5 ppb.

The EPA's target is 0. Impossible to achieve. (What kind of
scientists does your gov't hire?!?)

Various countries set soil limits of 30, 40 and 50 ppm for
residential building sites, higher ones in industrial areas.

We undertook our first comprehensive arsenic study in 1970 when the
gold mines were in full production with little in the way of modern
abatement techniques in effect as to smoke stack emissions or
tailings pond management. We found 1500 ppm in our drinking water
which was taken from Yellowknife Bay, not far from the mouth of
Baker Creek which runs right through a mine property. In 1972
we moved our supply intake to the Yellowknife River several miles
upstream from that mine and our levels have been under 5 ppb ever
since.

We also found arsenic concentrations throughout the city averaged
l22 ppm, which is within the natural levels for the mineral-enriched
geologic formation that underlies the area, but way above the 30-50
ppm guidelines cited above.

For the mine vicinity trailer courts, arsenic levels were higher,
averaging 404 ppm. (This is where we scraped off and replaced 6
inches of top soil, except under the mobile homes where the soil was
covered with geo-textile tarps, and under garages, sheds and paved
driveways which effectively seal and contain any airborne dust.

Our incidence of cancer is no worse than the rest of Canada although
to be fair a study should be done on ex-Yellowknifers living
elsewhere as most of us retire and move away when we are 50-60 years
old.

My exposure to it may be above guidelines but I'd be far more
concerned living in Toronto or LA with their smog problems or
highly industrial areas in the rust belt.

      5    mint leaves
      3    wedges lime
      1 c  crushed ice
      1 ts simple syrup
    1/2 ts lime juice
      2 fl spiced rum
      2 fl cranberry juice
      2 fl soda water

Place the mint leaves, lime wedges, and ice into a cocktail shaker;
mash well with a cocktail muddler. Pour in the simple syrup, lime
juice, rum, cranberry juice, and soda water. Cover, and shake until
the outside of the shaker has frosted. Strain into a chilled glass
to serve.
