-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> Not something I have personally experienced. What did you see?

ML> Heard more than saw. This was a 742 in the '80s or maybe
ML> early into the '90s. Banging noises, smoke, followed by a
ML> clanging such as you'd get if you ran a stick across a metal
ML> fence when you walked past. I wondered whether to ask about
ML> it (I don't recall an announcement being made), but it was

I feel sure that the paying customers would have appreciated some
reassurance that the wing was not about to drop off.

ML> pointed out that the thing would run perfectly fine on 3 engines,
ML> and the crew probably knew what they were dealing with. At that

From what I have read, a compressor stall is something that results
from mis-management of the engine, so the crew should have been very
aware of the problem (a whoops!), and been able to fix it.

ML> point I swore I'd never fly that airline again, but when I
ML> returned (safely) I found waiting for me a notice that I was now
ML> a Premier Mileage Plus member and thus entitled to a certain
ML> number of upgrades. I flew that airline again.

I note that you carefully didn't name the airline, so I can probably
deduce which one it was.

ML> I've not been inside the Antonov (have seen it from the outside),
ML> but the impression I have is that it couldn't carry the biggest
ML> 787 parts, whereas the Dreamlifter was designed to do just that.
 ML> For previous aircraft, Boeing is said to have used the Antonov;
ML> for this one, this monstrosity had to be custom made - not by
ML> Boeing, interestingly, but by the parent company of EVA Air.

So if the future 787s' Trent 900s catastrophically fail, damaging the
wings, replacement wings and engines could be quickly flown all around
the world, as required.

ML> I believe that all 747s can carry a fifth engine.
GJ> That would be an interesting sight.
ML> Here is an article about "your" Qantas doing this -
 ML> http://travelconsumerdaily.com/story.php?id=524

Thanks. I read that article, also the one about the 747 losing
hydraulic pressure due to a connection not being properly tightened.
Qantas engineering maintenance ground staff in Australia have been
complaining about Qantas having work done overseas, saying the
standard is not as high as in Australia. I'm sure they will pick that.

 ML> and a photo of same -
 ML> http://www.flickr.com/photos/45728356@N07/4199734330/

An interesting sight, with that fifth engine neatly tucked in close to
the wing and fuselage.

ML> Both methods have their pluses and minuses, mostly the latter.
GJ> I can't think of any personal pluses to being thus searched.
ML> I've got to hedge this one, as on a personal level, aside from
ML> the tiny decrease in the chance of being involved in a terrorist-
ML> caused incident (probably well offset by the increase in the
ML> chance of getting some arcane sort of cancer if one uses the
ML> nude-o-scope), there aren't any pluses to either search method.

Have you heard of any terrorists being caught by these new methods?
Of course the main purpose of those methods of detection is not to
detect, but just to dissuade potential bombers from bombing.

 ML> =

GJ> Apart from the taste method, he says his vision is affected when his
GJ> blood sugar rises. He also has blood testing device issued by the
GJ> Diabetes Foundation, although that is currently out of test strips, or
 GJ> battery, or something.
ML> A good excuse. What would be the alteration in his routine if
ML> his blood sugar exceeded some threshold?

When his vision becomes a little blurred, he blames the diabetes, so
if it is high sugar he cures it with a glass (or two) of red wine, and
perhaps some bitter melon tea if he has any handy. If low sugar and
he might be going hypo, jelly beans. Life with diabetes, for him, is
a matter of delicate balance.

Title: Vanilla Ice Cream - Diabetic *WW #2
Categories: Diabetic, Ice cream, Dessert, Snack
      Yield: 4 Servings

    1/4 ts Gelatin
      1 tb Water; cold
    1/2 c Evaporated skim milk
    1/2 ts Vanilla extract
           Sugar substitute to equal
           -4 ts Sugar

    SOURCE: 1972 Weight Watchers Cookbook
Sprinkle gelatin over cold water in 1 1/2 quart mixing bowl. Heat
evaporated skim milk over very low heat or in the top part of a double
boiler placed over hot water. When milk is hot but not boiling, add
all of it, including thin skin which form on top, to the mixing bowl.
Stir well to dissolve gelatin, then chill throroughly in freezer for
a few minutes. Whip cold mixture with beater at medium speed until it
stands in peaks but is not dry. Add vanilla and sweetner and beat
just long enough to incorporate them. Put mixing bowl into freezer
until mixture is almost frozen, 30 - 40 minutes. Divide into 4 equal
portions and use at once. Or store frozen cream mixture, in 4 small
bowls, or in a ice cube tray - without the dividers - and use as
desired. Let ice "cream" soften slightly in the refrigerator before
  serving.
    Makes 4 servings.
Count 1 oz. evaporated skim milk per serving.
VARIATION: Coffee Ice Cream: Follow recipe above, but dissolve 1
1/2 teaspoons instant coffee powder in evaporated skim milk in double
boiler. Add dash of maple and black walnut extract if desired.

MMMMM
