Better to eat food from street hawkers, where you can see it cooked
right before your eyes, rather than in an unseen, cockroach-ridden
kitchen in your fancy hotel.

Even allowing for partial subsidising of relatives, I can live there
on about half the cost of living in Australia, at the same standard.

Insurance costs for those ships of ill fame would be enormous.

Leyte was where McArthur ("I shall return!") returned to the
Philippines.  There is a 150% sized sculpture on the beach there of
the general and several of his followers striding purposefully out of
the sea, intent on saving the country from Japan.  According to locals
I spoke to, McArthur leapt out of the boat a bit early, when he was
still out of his depth, and had to be dragged back into the boat.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05
 
      Title: Calderetta
 Categories: Asian, Filipino, Meats
      Yield: 5 Servings
 
    500 g  Beef round, cubed
    1/4 c  Vinegar
     10    Peppercorns, crushed
      1 t  Salt
      2 cl Garlic, crushed
    1/4 c  Oil
      1 c  Onion, sliced
    1/2 c  Tomato sauce
      2 c  Boiling water
      1 c  Red or green pepper, strips
      1    Bay leaf
      1    Dash of hot sauce
    1/3 c  Liver spread
 
  Marinate beef in mixture of vinegar, peppercorn, salt and crushed
  garlic for 1 1/2 - 2 hours. Fry pieces of beef in cooking oil. Add
  onions and saute until tender. Pour in tomato sauce and boiling
  water. Add the green pepper, bay leaf and hot sauce as desired. Cover
  and simmer until meat is tender. Blend in liver spread. Cook 5
  minutes more.
