Last week I visited Invercargill, the home of the late Burt Munro, of
"Fastest Indian" fame.  You may recall that he achieved a world record
speed of 178.97mph in 1962 at Bonneville, with his greatly modified
Indian, bored out to 850cc.  In 1967 he managed 183.58mph, with it
bored out to 950cc.  Loss of control on that run resulted in him
having to put the bike down at about 190 mph, but he survived.

In 1997, in failing health, he sold his "Munro Special" to local
enthusiast Norman Hayes.  He passed away on 6th January, 1978.  In
2008 Burt Munro was postumously inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of
Fame.  Several versions of his "World's fastest Indian" that were
produced for the movie of that name exist in Invercargill, at Norman
Hayes hardware shop, in USA, and in the Invercargill museum (which
also houses "Henry", at over 130 years of age, the oldest living
tuatara known).  (These lizard-like beasts are more closely related to
dinosaurs than to any modern reptiles.)

I also made a pilgramage to the Oreti Beach, which featured in the
early part of the movie.  The speed limit on that beach is now only
30km/h.

      Title: Whitebait Fritters
 Categories: Appetisers, Mains, Fish, New zealand, Charmaine
      Yield: 4 servings
 
    250 g  Whitebait
      1    Egg
    125 ml Milk
     60 g  Flour
           Salt and pepper
           Oil;for shallow frying
           Lemon wedges;to serve
 
  Rinse the whitebait in a sieve, running cold water through them.
  Leave to drain while preparing batter. Beat egg and milk, whisk in
  flour until smooth, adding salt and pepper. The batter should be of a
  thin, pouring consistency.
  
  When ready to cook, mix in the whitebait. Have the oil heated in a
  heavy frying pan. Drop tb of fritter mixture into the hot oil, not
  too many at one time. Cook quickly until undersides are golden, then
  turn and cook other side. Lift out on slotted spoon onto paper towels
  and cook in batches until all are done.
  
  Serve hot with wedges of lemon.
