It's a joke, Dave.  A joke.  Obviously, you didn't get it.  I
was poking fun.  Not at Ed, or anybody in particular, but rather
at sysops, participants, lurkers, fido, and BBSing in general.

We (fido sysops, participants, etc.) are a product of yesterday.
Regardless of what our age is in years, we are old geezers.  Our
time has passed.  The world we grew up in no longer exists.

What does it mean to be human in an entirely new world - a digital
world - that has been created in less than one generation?  We are
trying to find out (at least some of us).  I doubt we will succeed.
Today's children already know, and swim in it, every day.

I am sorry you did not understand the joke.  Having to explain
a joke is something I should have expected, given the audience.
After all, we are the old geezers who can no longer seem to get
anything right.  :)

Speaking of mess kits, those who have served in the military
are very familiar with the bugler sounding "Mess Call".  But how
many know the words?

For the unenlightened, here is one version -
