Hi Janis,

JK> > So much for global warming! Yesterday, Swansboro (on the coast where
JK> we > used to live) got 7" of snow; we didn't get a flake! Steve

JK> Actually, I've read that this back and forth stuff is normal (?) for
JK> global warming.. But mostly I feel really bad for the Polor bears in
JK> all this.. I guess some of them are adapting though .. trying to live
JK> on land rather than the ice.

They will adjust; they have that nice fur coat to keep them cozy on land
or in water.

JK> > We've just started with adding extra humidity above what goes into
JK> the > air from showers, cooking etc. We're doing a lot of cooking of
 JK> rib
 JK> > sticking foods;

JK> That does help and we're doing about the same.

We did get a humidiier too; Steve's cold turned into a sinus infection
and the extra humidity helped him.

JK> >Steve is on part 2 of a cold that I've been avoiding (so

JK> Hope you did avoid it.. I did get the one that Ron had, but it didn't
JK> hit me as hard (go figure :) ). Still uncomfortable while it was
JK> around though .. We're supposed to finally hit the mid-thirties next
JK> week.. THAT will be a relief :)

So far, so good. I have had a few times when I get coughing but they've
cleared up within a day or so, usually helped with a round or 2 of
albuterol.

JK> > I've had one since late 1998; this is my second one. When it dies,
JK> it > will be replaced with one that has a retractable cord.

JK> That's a handy feature.. I hate it when cords get in the way when
JK> something isn't in use, etc.

I used to use rubber bands to hold the cord in a concentrated manner but
when we moved up here, we bought a bunch of the velcro all in one wrap
ties. I don't know how many we've used--in the kitche, computer room,
sewing room, etc but they're very handy.

JK> > Or read for school sew, etc. Got to take my serger in for a tune up,
JK> > etc; I think the timing is off too.

JK> A check up will come in handy then.. Back in "the old days", when my
JK> sewing machine was of the old mechanical type, I used to do all of
JK> that tuning up myself.. now I wouldn't dare touch it :)

We took the serger in a couple of weeks ago, stopped in on Monday since
we'd not heard back yet. Turns out it's got them stumped too--the timing
works well for a bit and then goes out of whack. They were waiting on a
call back from the Baby Lock serger repair specialist when we stopped
in. Mine is 15 years old; if I need to trade it in, I want an air jet
threader one. I don't want to have to fight with the loopers on a new
machine.

>> really fast. That should help.. expect the first time to be a failure

 JK> > Thanks for the "heads up" warning. I'll try about a "10 o'clock"
JK> setting > on the stove.

JK> Should work well. I still have to get Ron to adjust the simmer-burner
JK> on my gas stove.. trouble is, everytime I think about it, it's in use
JK> and too hot to handle. so I just keep using my cast-iron 10" frying
 JK> pan as a
 JK> 'buffer'. Works ok :)

I've not tried it yet, been too busy with "got to" cooking and school to
think about fussing with it.

>> That's neat :) I love turkey, and so does Ron. We've been known to
JK> > This one was good but not great. We'll go back to looking for the
JK> all > natural, no added brine/broth ones tho. They're a better value.

 JK> Agreed :)

>> > That's what I figured; the short grain should be close enough to
>> real > arborio rice to cook the same way.
>> Yes, it does.. as far as I can tell :)

JK> > Time to start experimenting then.

When life slows down a notch or 2. I'll finish this class in 3 weeks,
then have about 3 weeks before the intensive at the end of March. I'll
be working on baby sewing in that time.

JK> I see a number of comments on the web about that idea, some agree with
JK> me that it's "close" enough to make a creamy rice. Then there are
JK> some who say, 'use what you have' (g).

You pays your money, you takes your choice.

JK> I've noticed that at wegmans, you can find it in two different
JK> sections: One or two companies' are with all the different rices they
JK> sell, the other is in the specific Italian section. The one in the
JK> Italian section is smaller for price..

I didn't see it at all--and the Brockport Wegman's is a big (!) store.

JK> > At times it's a major pain. There are spells when nothing but time
JK> helps > the pain to go away. Days I have class I try not to do a lot

JK> Does heat help? like from a heating pad? I did a number on my
JK> shoulder this month and a heating pad seems to be the only thing that

Some heat, some creams and some meds. Trying to not use it is sometimes
the only thing that works.

>> I can undersand how that would be fun with every move.. makes the move
>> certainly interesting :)

JK> > It also lets us know what's in the area to know if we can or can't
JK> get > some of our food favorites. Living in so many different places,
JK> we've > picked up favorite dishes or foods from each of them. It's fun
JK> to make > them in a new location and remember where we first tried
 JK> them.

 JK> Very true :)

Makes life interesting and much more varied eating than meat and
potatoes all the time. (G)
