Ärende: MIGRATIONS 10310
=========================
-=> Quoting Dave Drum to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> If you have knowledge of any other theories on the migration of such
GJ> food ingredients, I would be interested to hear them.
DD> The only other theory I have read is Heyerdahl's - which is not
 DD> accepted by real anthropologists.

DD> Kon-Tiki demonstrated that it was possible for a primitive raft to
DD> sail the Pacific with relative ease and safety, especially to the west
DD> (with the wind). The raft proved to be highly maneuverable, and fish
DD> congregated between the nine balsa logs in such numbers that ancient
DD> sailors could have possibly relied on fish for hydration in the
DD> absence of other sources of fresh water. Inspired by Kon-Tiki, other
DD> rafts have repeated the voyage.

I read that book with great interest many years ago. The raft was not
maneuverable enough to avoid an eventual pile-up on an island.

DD> Anthropologists continue to believe, based on linguistic, physical,
DD> and genetic evidence, that Polynesia was settled from west to east,
DD> migration having begun from the Asian mainland. There are
DD> controversial indications, though, of some sort of South
DD> American/Polynesian contact, most notably in the fact that the South
DD> American sweet potato served as a dietary staple throughout much of
DD> Polynesia. Heyerdahl attempted to counter the linguistic argument with
DD> the analogy that, guessing the origin of African-Americans, he would
DD> prefer to believe that they came from Africa, judging from their skin
DD> colour, and not from England, judging from their speech.

"England"?! I very much doubt that the Poms of thousands of years ago
had much interest in colonising the Pacific. That came later.

DD> Heyerdahl's theory of Polynesian origins never gained acceptance by
DD> anthropologists. Physical and cultural evidence had long suggested
DD> that Polynesia was settled from west to east, migration having begun
DD> from the Asian mainland, not South America. In the late 1990s, genetic
DD> testing found that the mitochondrial DNA of the Polynesians is more
DD> similar to people from southeast Asia than to people from South
DD> America, showing that their ancestors most likely came from Asia.
DD> Easter Islanders are of Polynesian descent.

From what I have read recently, the first migrants to America are
thought to have arrived from East Asia via the Bering Land Bridge some
20,000 years ago, while the Melanesians migrated from Africa by a more
Southern route. Just where the Polynesians came from still seems to
be uncertain. The Australians arrived in their island continent home
much earlier - 40,000 to 60,000 years ago.

Polynesian boats and their navigators were quite sophisticated. At
the time when Europeans were first exploring the globe in their slow,
clumsy square-riggers, the high speed Polynesian lightweight outrigger
and catamaran sailing craft could tack, and thus sail up-wind. That
meant they could sail off in every direction, with the confidence that
they could always get home. Polynesian maps used for navigation were
made from sticks and string, and gave location by showing information
about such items as wind direction and wave patterns.

Hopefully, someone will be able to write a definitive history of the
region, based on DNA plotting, oral traditions, and the few artifacts
available. Perhaps the DNA of the sweet potatoes could help.

DD> One legend that recurs throughout history, in all cultures, is
 DD> Popeye!

Really? Is Olive Oyl included?

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

Title: Roasted Garlic With Garlic-Infused Olive Oil
 Categories: Condiments
      Yield: 1 Batch

  1 1/2 c Garlic cloves (about 60 to
     70 Cloves or 6 ounces)
  2 1/2 c Extra virgin olive oil

  Pre-heat oven to 350 F.

Add whole, peeled garlic cloves to casserole dish and immerse in
olive oil. Bake uncovered for 45 minutes or until garlic is golden in
color and oil is bubbling. Remove from oven and allow to cool. Gently
scoop out the roasted garlic cloves. Refrigerate cloves in a sealed
container and reserve for later. Strain oil into a separate container
and store until needed, or up to 2 weeks.

Presentation: Spread roasted garlic onto toast or incorporate into any
savory recipe. Use garlic oil to saute vegetables, season pasta, dress
  salad or drizzle onto toast.

Tips: Be sure to allow the oil to cool before attempting a container
  transfer (don't get burned)!
