Ärende: FISH FARMS 10322

-=> Quoting Dave Drum to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> Although most people agree that farm-raised fish, prawns and other
GJ> water resident beasts are in most cases inferior in flavour and
GJ> texture to their wild equivalents, they provide a cheap source of
GJ> protein to a lot of the world's population. The Southern Bluefin

DD> One of my racing buddies, Jerry Inmon, had a farm in western
DD> Mississippi consisting mostly of bottom land. It flooded often enough
DD> that he decided to get out of corn and cotton and into catfish
DD> farming. Since he was more-or-less a pioneer in pond raised catfish he
DD> devised most of his own methods ... including stepped ponds which
DD> forced the fish to swim - and kept the fish food from settling to the
DD> bottom and becoming sludge. He also devised a sort of weigh-in-motion
DD> device which forced the fish to swim individually past the device.
DD> When the fish swimming past was of sufficient size a gate opened to
DD> direct it to the next pond. Eventually the fish wound up in a final

Very ingenious. I wonder how he did that? Even Archimedes would find
that difficult.

DD> Quite an operation and it made him very well off ... deservedly so. I
DD> believe that he was bought out by one of the giant agri-business
DD> outfits. And I have every confidence that they screwed the pooch by
DD> trying to "improve" an already smooth running operation.

Hopefully he then applied his ingenuity to other worthy projects.

Near where I lived for a while in Manila there were some dis-used salt
ponds in which many catfish lived. From time to time a man would wade
out, carrying a wooden pole with a steel ring on the end, and a wire
connecting it to one terminal of the 220 volt power supply, which was
centre-tapped to earth, so 110 volts was applied to the water near the
ring. That knocked the catfish out and they floated to the top, to be
harvested. After giving the owner of the power point some fish as
payment for the electricity used, the fisherman usually did well in
sales to other nearby houses.

Catfish can survive quite a while out of water. I remember my
sister-in-law chasing one around the kitchen with a cleaver when it
had unexpectedly come to life and tried to escape. Then we _all_
tried to escape!

She used to cook it in coconut cream with lemon grass leaves, which
was good. Another way is ang adobo:-
