Ärende: Japanese 153
====================
Hi Michael,

RH> Yes, and it will be good for everybody over there, and a lot of people
RH> in other parts of the world as well.

ML> The globalized economy being what it is, the international
ML> competition model has to be balanced or perhaps replaced
ML> by a cooperation model. What's good for Japan will be good
 ML> for elsewhere as well.

I think quite a few industries worldwide shuddered when the quake and
tsunami hit Japan. I don't know how Asian grocery stores here in the US
fared--what proportion of their products are Japanese factors into it
but some probably took a hit. Remember the mochi Steve and I found at
the store xxCarol referred us to last year?

ML> I wonder how we'd do in a situation as grave as that.
ML> Would we become the aggressive monsters that
ML> postapocalyptic fiction so eagerly posits?
RH> Look at post Katrina New Orleans or post Sept. 11 NYC to get some
RH> ideas of how people would react. When the Pentagon got hit, a number of
RH> "big brass" were carrying strechers along side of regular enlisted
RH> folks. No separation of rank there.

ML> Post-Katrina was a mixed bag - it brought out the best and worst
ML> in people. The Pentagon situation was different. It was an
ML> addressable situation; the people involved were trained or
ML> informed about how to behave in an emergency; and there was
ML> that commonality of purpose and culture that you might not get
ML> in other segments of the society. It's not necessarily that the
ML> military in 9-11 were intrinsically better than the civilians
ML> at New Orleans - rather that they were trained to be better.

Definately so; that's why they are called on in so many natural
disasters world wide. We're about an hour and a half from Fort Bragg, an
hour or so more to get to Camp Lejeune so we're still very much aware of
the deployments for humanitarian aid.

ML> clan. Here there may be more of a "they're different, who
ML> cares about them" thing going.
RH> Sad to say, that may very well be the case with a lot of people in
 RH> this country.

 ML> I'm afraid of that.

It can be scary to think about.

ML> Then there will be those who will risk their own lives
RH> (and sometimes lose it) trying to rescue someone, just because another
 RH> life is at risk.

ML> Altruism is a subject of much speculation. Is it a gift,
ML> divine or genetic or whatever? Or does it confer benefit
ML> to the species? Or both.

I could go into a discussion based on biblical teachings but this isn't
the place for it. Sufficient to say that the Golden Rule should be the
basis of any actions taken.

ML> Barley-Filled Cabbage in Pickled Tomato Sauce
 ML> cat: vegetarian, main
 ML> serves: 4

 ML> 7 Tb olive oil
 ML> 1 lg onion, diced
ML> 42 oz canned crushed tomatoes
ML> 1 orange, peeled and chopped
 ML> 1 c honey
 ML> 1/2 c apple cider
 ML> 1/2 c cider vinegar
 ML> 1 1/2 c raw barley
 ML> s&p
 ML> 1 xl extra-lg cabbage head
ML> 1 md onion, thinly sliced
 ML> 1 1/2 ts mustard seed
 ML> 2 ts Dijon mustard
ML> 1/4 c champagne vinegar or cider vinegar
 ML> 2 c chicken or vegetable stock.

I've been perusing a Hungarian cook book lately; this looks like
something I'd find in it. I'm going to try the goulash recipe in it
tomorrow, will post if it turns out well. We're initiating the tagine
tonight with a honey-cardomom chicken recipe that was included with it.

Catch you later,
Ruth
