================================
-=> Quoting Jim Weller to Glen Jamieson <=-

JW> I guess you won't see this for a week or so...

I didn't. Initially because I was "inside", and then because my
dial-up phone line was out.

GJ> Forgive my ignorance, but if the body is kept warm enough by using a
GJ> sufficient quantity of insulating wolverine skins, is it still
GJ> possible to suffer fatal hypothermia just from heat lost from nose,
GJ> face and ears? Or could the booze help prevent the loss of those
 GJ> extremities from frostbite?

JW> I suppose booze wouldn't harm you IF you dressed warmly enough to
JW> protect your body. But drunks have been known to feel so warm that
JW> they take their coats off. Hypothermia isn't always noticeable; it
 JW> sneaks up on you.

If a high energy source of heat was supplied at the same time as the
alcohol, such as sweet white wine or a port, hopefully that would
maintain the core temp if only the extremities were bare. (Not that
such an unpleasant circumstance is likely to happen to me!)

GJ> BTW, this is my last posting for at least a week, as I go under the
 GJ> knife tomorrow.
GJ> I shall report on the sort of catering done in
GJ> Australian private hospitals these days.

JW> We shall look forward to that.

I am still alive. The hospital food was bland and unimaginative. I
was not allowed alcohol for 24 hours after the operation, but then I
ordered a glass of red wine with my dinner, and got it. A mediocre,
quaffable Cabernet Shiraz, at a rough guess. That helped me to keep
down the food supplied. On checking out from the hospital I asked the
doctor whether I could return to a "normal" diet, while still taking
antibiotics and a blood thinner, and he gave permission for 2 glasses
of wine per day. Today I finish the last of the antibiotics.

I was forced onto my feet the day after the operation, and kept at it
from then on, with other exercises. Today (day 12) I had my first walk
down the street, in company with one of my gaolers (Daughter Lee); it
was good. I used a stick.

 GJ> If I don't return from the
GJ> state of imposed unconsciousness, you can send condolences to Kevin.

JW> Ah but you will. I guess I should say, "see... you did!"

Now I am eating the food that Kevin cooked on Thursday - steak and
mushroom pie. The Indonesian meatballs are finished, and the pasty
slice remains.

Title: STUFFED BUSH TURKEY LEG ROASTED
 Categories: Mains, Poultry, Aboriginal, Australian
      Yield: 5 servings

      2 Bush turkey legs; boned
      8 sl Bacon rashers
           Salt and pepper
           ; STUFFING
      1 tb Olive oil; OR
      1 tb ; canola oil
      1 Onions; chop fine
      1 c Carrots; diced
      1 c Bush peanuts; clean/roast
           ; lightly/skined/rough chop
      2 Eggs
      1 c Milk
      2 c Breadcrumbs
      2 tb Mixed herbs, dry

This is a top family dish that adds extra nutrition to the favourite
hunted bird. The feathers of the bush turkey are used in ceremonial
  dancing.

Lay bush turkey leg meat out & pat flat with stick or hand. Layer with
  bacon.

To make stuffing; lightly fry onions, carrot & bush peanuts in oil.
Cool. Whisk eggs & milk in large bowl or dish. Add breadcrumbs & dry
herbs. Mix with onion, carrot & bush peanuts to make a thick moist
  paste (similar to damper dough).

Lay half the stuffing on each leg & form into a roll, folding meat
over. Season well with salt & pepper.

Tie meat with string to keep shape; alternatly, wrap in aluminium
foil & twist the ends. Seal meat in roasting pan & then cook in a hot
oven, 200^C for one hour. A camp oven can also be used.

Set cooked leg aside for 5 minutes to allow juices to rest. Slice &
serve with mashed potatoes & freshly cooked vegetables. If not
  available, use frozen vegetables.

Serve with pan juices. From: WALKABOUT CHEFS By: STEVE SUNK & DAVID
