DD> Cruelty and pain are *NOT* the same thing. Humour is based on
DD> someone's pain, be it physical or psychic. That's all.

NB> But when directed at someone else, often done cruelly...

"Jokes" directed at someone - whether verbal or physical are a particularly
vile form of bullying and have nothing to do with humour. The only person to
whom they are funny is the perpetrator - who in many cases ought to be
subjected to the same treatment as s/he dishes out. I have managed to
accomplish that only a few times - with the tag-line to the bully "Not so funny
now that you're on the other end, is it?" Probably did not inspire them to
change their ways or even cause them to see or admit that they had done
something bad. But, it certainly made me feel better.

DD> Practical Jokes are not "practical" nor are they jokes. Rather they are
DD> pranks which are often, as you say, cruel.

 NB> Agreed there.

DD> Practical "jokers" ought to be put into a big sack with punsters, the
DD> sack weighted and cast into a deep, fast running stream.

NB> The punsters could be an apt punishment for the practical "jokers", to
NB> be sure, especially if they put out particularly bad puns... ;)
NB> Another particularly apt punishment, though, would be for them to have
NB> to be the brunt of practical "jokes", to feel how it is to be on the
 NB> other side...

See above - although, as I said, it probably doesn't leave a lasting
mpression.

NB> Puns, or more specifically play with words, is a higher pastime than
NB> usually given credit, though... ;) Groaners though they may be...
 NB> (G)

The only punsters for whom I have any respect are the ones who can make a pun
that works in more than one language. Isaac Asimov (Isaak Judah Ozimov) was
such a person ... who also wrote pretty decent speculative fiction and
Edgar-winning mysteries as well as being a professor of biochemistry at Boston
University.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

Title: The Practically Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie
 Categories: Cookies, Snacks, Chocolate
      Yield: 40 cookies

  2 1/4 c Flour
      1 ts (level) baking soda
      1 ts (level) salt
    3/4 c (ea) white & packed dark
           - brown sugars
1/2 lb Sweet butter; room temp
      1 ts Vanilla extract
      2 lg Eggs
     12 oz Pkg Nestle' semisweet
           - chocolate chips

This recipe was developed by CONSUMER REPORTS, known for
their high standards. Here are their prefacing remarks:

We wanted a cookie with a chewy interior, crunchy edges,
and well-blended flavor. Above all, we wanted a cookie
with a high overall chocolate impact to give a sensuous
rush to the chocoholic. After much experimentation and
perhaps a few cumulative inches to staffers' waistlines,
we created a cookie with all those assets. Our recipe
  makes 40 medium-sized cookies.

  Preheat oven to 375øF/190øC.

Mix the flour, baking soda and salt in a bowl and set
  aside.

Use a stand-type electric mixer to mix the two sugars
  briefly at low speed.

Add the butter in small gobbets, mixing first at low speed
and then at high. Beat the mixture until it's pale, light,
  and very fluffy.

Add the vanilla at the mixer's lowest speed, then beat at
high speed for a few seconds.

Add the eggs, again at the lowest speed, switching to high
speed for the final second or so. The eggs should be well
beaten in, and the mix should look creamed, not curdled.

Add the flour mixture, a half cup at a time, mixing at low
speed for about one minute, then at high speed for a few
  seconds.

Scrape down the bowl's sides with a spatula, add the
chocolate chips, and mix at low speed for about 10
seconds. If need be, scrape the bowl's sides again and mix
  for a few more seconds.

Put tablespoons of the mix on an ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake until the cookies are pale golden brown (nine minutes
in an electric oven, 10 to 11 minutes in a gas one).

Remove and let cool on a rack.

  Makes about 40 medium cookies.
