He was so sure that anyone that played that well must be male, and of a

Remaining hard feelings, eh...?

Perhaps the RPO (Rochester) is more progressive...  Years ago, the
principal viola was a woman, a good friend of ours along with her
husband, second trombone... They met at the orchestra and married after
we knew them already...  My first exposure to Harold in Italy was going
to the concert for which she was the soloist... :)   Nowadays, the
concertmaster is a young woman, who likewise met her husband there, the
principal oboeist, IIRC...  At least your friend Patty was able to keep
the position she'd blind-auditioned for so successfully..  :)
