I like both - but, don't overindulge in either. I began drinking coffee (black,
nothing added) when I was eight years old - because my Grand Dad drank it that
way. Later when I was thumb-tripping about the US I found that cream and sugar
could add food value to a 5c cuppa. That was hard to wean myself from after I
no longer needed "expedient measures". The sugar wasn't bad. But the cream/milk
was hard to give up.

Sitting here thinking back - it has been over two years since I had a beer (or
anything alcoholic). I'd probably be a cheap date - two drinks and I'd get
tiddly. Looking in the ice box I found a Micheloeb Amber Bock left over from
the Y2K picnic still residing in the door. It's probably not fit to drink ...
but, it generates some nice memories.

There will likely be other picnics. Hopefully I'll be able to attend one or
more of them. And with my new store-bought teeth, enjoy what is served without
reservation.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Mocha Pound Cake w/Coffee Icing
 Categories: Cakes, Desserts, Beverages
      Yield: 10 servings

      3 lg Eggs
    1/2 c  Water
      1 tb Instant espresso powder
           +=OR=+
      4 ts Instant coffee crystals
      2 c  Sifted cake flour
           +=OR=+
  1 3/4 c  Sifted all-purpose flour
    1/2 ts Salt
    1/2 ts Cream of tartar
    1/4 ts Baking soda
    2/3 c  Shortening
  1 1/4 c  Sugar
      1 ts Vanilla
      2 oz Unsweetened chocolate;
           - melted, cooled

MMMMM-----------------------COFFEE ICING----------------------------
    1/2 ts Instant espresso powder
           +=OR=+
      1 ts Instant coffee crystals
      2 ts Milk
    1/2 c  Sifted powdered sugar

  This just goes to show there's nothing new under the sun.
  Coffee was a popular ingredient as far back as 1955, when
  this java-lover's potluck pound cake won our dessert
  category.

  Let eggs stand at room temperature for 30 minutes.

  Meanwhile, grease and lightly flour a 9" X 5" X 3" loaf
  pan; set aside.

  In a small mixing bowl, combine water and espresso powder;
  set aside. In a medium mixing bowl, combine flour, salt,
  cream of tartar, and baking soda; set aside.

  Preheat oven to 325øF/163øC.

  In a large mixing bowl, beat shortening with an electric
  mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Gradually
  add sugar, beating about 10 minutes or until very light
  and fluffy. Beat in vanilla. Add eggs, one at a time,
  beating for 1 minute after each addition and scraping side
  of bowl frequently. Beat in chocolate. Add flour mixture
  and espresso mixture alternately to beaten mixture,
  beating on low to medium speed after each addition just
  until combined. Spread batter evenly in prepared pan.

  Bake in preheated oven for 65 to 70 minutes or until a
  toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool in
  pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes.
 
  Remove from pan. Cool thoroughly on rack. Drizzle with
  Coffee Icing.

  TO PREPARE THE COFFEE ICING: In a small mixing bowl,
  dissolve 1/2 teaspoon instant espresso coffee powder or 1
  teaspoon instant coffee crystals in 2 teaspoons milk. Stir
  in 1/2 cup sifted powdered sugar until smooth. If needed,
  stir in additional milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, to make an
  icing of drizzling consistency.
