Ärende: Sunday dinners was: kitch
=================================
Hi Nancy,

RH> No, and good roads make for fast driving times. We've lived several
RH> places where we've been about 15 minutes from the church. Other times
RH> we've been closer, or further away. This is the first place we've been
RH> able to walk to, a big help after Steve's stroke.

NB> The year I lived in Syracuse, I was only a couple blocks away from the
NB> church we were attending... normally though, it's been about the same
NB> as we have now, plus or minus... except for where we go when up to
NB> the Pond... that's more like 45 minutes away...

Distance doesn't matter, as long as you go. Steve had several pulpit
supply Sundays in AZ where we had to drive over an hour to get to the
church.

NB> NB>> somewhere every Sunday... so the custom got well established. ;)

RH> Our former youth pastor said that before his mom passed away (while he
RH> was in high school), she made him promise that his (future) wife would
RH> not have to cook Sunday dinner. Figured, knowing he planned to go into
RH> the ministry, she'd be busy enough on Sunday mornings without having
RH> to worry about that. I've used the crock pot quite a bit, with easy do
 RH> sides.

NB> Was she a minister's wife herself, or a PK...? That sounds a lot

I don't know, and the youth pastor has moved on. I think he has tried to
hold to that as much as possible, or did when they were in WF anyway.

NB> like the voice of experience... ;) I can't think of any of our
 NB> pastors
NB> over the years that followed that, though... Most made a practice of
NB> having guests over for dinner, although they may have used the slow
NB> cooking while away methods to make it less cumbersome... Only
NB> bachelor pastors were likely to be being fed elsewhere... ;) Our
NB> current pastor helps with the cooking and the meal prep, so it isn't
NB> all on his wife to do everything.. :)

We've been fed (as guest pastor) and fed others. It is a help in a
family with young children when the man of the house is comfortable in
the kitchen.

NB> starting at NB>> 11:00 (prelude generally starts at ten of)...

RH> That's the way it was in the church where I grew up. I never paid
RH> attention to the time the prelude started because I was either too
RH> young or busy with other things (choir, most generally).

NB> I often have to pay attention to the prelude timing, being as I'm
NB> playing it... (G) When I was growing up, it was often my mom
NB> playing for the service, so I suppose I may have been more aware...

Sounds like it. (G) As long as I got to where I needed to be by when I
had to be there, all was OK

NB> NB>> Yup, sharing space can make for some interesting scheduling...
NB> as NB>> can alternative forms of transportation... ;)

RH> But, we managed pretty well. Nice thing about Berlin was that we
RH> didn't have to pay for public transportation (paid by Status of Forces
RH> Agreement) directly. We didn't have to come up with money for the
RH> fare, just show our ID card. Also, public transportation was very
RH> reliable, as is usual over there.

NB> That's always helpful... both the fare setup, and the reliability..
NB> :) Our bus service, while not always convenient for every place, is
NB> pretty reliable... but Sunday schedules tend to be more spread out
NB> than during the week, so using it for transport to a midday meal might
NB> well make things later than hoped for... :)

Saturday and Sunday schedules both differed from the Monday thru Friday
one so we had to have a working knowledge of which bus came what days,
what times and go from there. We only had to make one change, which was
a big help.

NB> NB>> Today's was just a basic pot luck, and good stuff as always for
NB> NB>> mains, salads and desserts...

RH> Always fun just to sit down and share a meal with folks, especially
RH> ones you don't see that often (if you've got multiple services).

NB> Absolutely... and while we don't have multiple services like the
NB> larger churches might, it's still good to talk with people you
 NB> normally just
NB> see at the other side of the church during services... ;)

I know; I'm going to try to get together next week with one of the other
ladies for tea (at the tea room in town) just to catch up with each
other.

RH> I made a Moroccan chicken with couscous once for a pot luck in
RH> Savannah that one guy really chowed down on. Another said it sounded
 RH> good--until I said "couscous".

NB> Some people are too easily scared off... (G) For them, one has to
 NB> call it rice, I suppose... ;)

But it's obviously not rice, as he would have found out had he tried it.

Catch you later,
Ruth
