Ärende: Sunday dinners was: kitch

RH>> It's near our current church building but IIRC, this was before we
RH>> moved. We were meeting in North Raleigh, about 15 minutes away but
RH>> this occurred during the week.
NB>> 15 minutes away isn't all that far... we often go at least that, to
NB>> get to places we particularly like... plus we live about 10-12
NB>> minutes away from church anyway.. :)

RH> No, and good roads make for fast driving times. We've lived several
RH> places where we've been about 15 minutes from the church. Other times
RH> we've been closer, or further away. This is the first place we've been
RH> able to walk to, a big help after Steve's stroke.

The year I lived in Syracuse, I was only a couple blocks away from the
church we were attending... normally though, it's been about the same as
we have now, plus or minus... except for where we go when up to the
Pond... that's more like 45 minutes away...

NB>> We just made it a family custom to eat out on Sundays, to give me a
NB>> break from fixing dinner, especially on Sundays that I'm taking my
NB>> turn at accompaniment.. There was a time when I was playing
NB>> somewhere every Sunday... so the custom got well established. ;)

RH> Our former youth pastor said that before his mom passed away (while he
RH> was in high school), she made him promise that his (future) wife would
RH> not have to cook Sunday dinner. Figured, knowing he planned to go into
RH> the ministry, she'd be busy enough on Sunday mornings without having
RH> to worry about that. I've used the crock pot quite a bit, with easy do
 RH> sides.

Was she a minister's wife herself, or a PK...? That sounds a lot like
the voice of experience... ;) I can't think of any of our pastors
over the years that followed that, though... Most made a practice of
having guests over for dinner, although they may have used the slow
cooking while away methods to make it less cumbersome... Only bachelor
pastors were likely to be being fed elsewhere... ;) Our current pastor
helps with the cooking and the meal prep, so it isn't all on his wife to
do everything.. :)

NB>> There's some variation between our churches, but most common is the
NB>> way ours does it, with Sunday School at 9:45 and church starting at
NB>> 11:00 (prelude generally starts at ten of)...

RH> That's the way it was in the church where I grew up. I never paid
RH> attention to the time the prelude started because I was either too
RH> young or busy with other things (choir, most generally).

I often have to pay attention to the prelude timing, being as I'm
playing it... (G) When I was growing up, it was often my mom playing
for the service, so I suppose I may have been more aware...

RH>> we had Sunday School start at 10:45 (in a nearby school), then
RH>> worship started at noon. Definately a later mid day meal, especially
RH>> when we had to use the bus to get there/back.
NB>> Yup, sharing space can make for some interesting scheduling... as
NB>> can alternative forms of transportation... ;)

RH> But, we managed pretty well. Nice thing about Berlin was that we
RH> didn't have to pay for public transportation (paid by Status of Forces
RH> Agreement) directly. We didn't have to come up with money for the
RH> fare, just show our ID card. Also, public transportation was very
RH> reliable, as is usual over there.

That's always helpful... both the fare setup, and the reliability.. :)
Our bus service, while not always convenient for every place, is pretty
reliable... but Sunday schedules tend to be more spread out than during
the week, so using it for transport to a midday meal might well make
things later than hoped for... :)

RH>> had Discipleship Training at 6 (think Sunday School with elective
RH>> classes), followed by worship at 7. After that, a number of us
RH>> would usually head to a local fast food place for another hour or
RH>> so of fellowship and food.
NB>> With all that scheduled, one might as well make a day of it.. ;)
NB>> Our church does a compacted schedule second Sundays, with a church
NB>> dinner for food and fellowship between the regular morning service
NB>> and a moved up to the afternoon (instead of the regular 6 o'clock
NB>> evening) service directly afterwards... We had that today. :)
NB>> Today's was just a basic pot luck, and good stuff as always for
 NB>> mains, salads and desserts...

RH> Always fun just to sit down and share a meal with folks, especially
RH> ones you don't see that often (if you've got multiple services).

Absolutely... and while we don't have multiple services like the larger
churches might, it's still good to talk with people you normally just
see at the other side of the church during services... ;)

RH> I made a Moroccan chicken with couscous once for a pot luck in
RH> Savannah that one guy really chowed down on. Another said it sounded
 RH> good--until I said "couscous".

Some people are too easily scared off... (G) For them, one has to call
it rice, I suppose... ;)
