NB>>> short-sighted (figuratively) programmers have been with us always.. ;)
ML>> So maybe haste in the design stage is a factor.
NB>> Or just not thinking through all the ramifications of the design...
ML> Maybe, but to me that means haste. And waste.

Waste, perhaps, but I hesitate to attribute to haste what probably was
merely obliviousness.. ;)

ML> I don't BBS shop - back when they were new, and there were
ML> lots of them, I used to go to meetings and occasionally
ML> add one as the sysop became my friend, even when I found
ML> issues with the software. It was more likely that a BBS
ML> would die than I would leave it.

Back in the day, I would check out any local bbs that purported to carry
genealogical stuff (whether files or meassage areas, but particularly
the echo areas, from Fidonet, and for a while from a few other nets)...
I was trying to encourage some other not-too-computer-savvy sorts to use
the computer and bbses for their genealogy pursuits, so was compiling
and keeping a list of ones that were better (or worse) than others at
providing the service... Along the way, the concept of backups being
useful became clear... plus, I made friends with some of the better
sysops, so tended to stick around their bbses... I eventually dropped
any BBS that didn't meet the standards I was looking for.

ML> Since the mid '90s, though,
ML> I've been faithful as possible to Doc's, though I have
ML> poked around echo friends' systems occasionally.

Mike's Holodeck was my most faithful bbs... when he was gone for a
while, I'd find someplace else to pick up the slack, but as soon as he
reappeared, that would become my primary again... Now that he's gone
forever, I'm having to adjust. Waldo's Place was working well until his
offline reader went flooey... so now I'm needing to use Doc's as
primary, too (he's been a major backup for ages). My first criteria is
stability of the bbs and carrying all the echos that I'm active in...
And a big bonus is having a BW door for offline instead of QWK, but I
will settle for QWK if that's all I can get... sigh... ;)

ML>> Stroganoff by its nature and origin is Russian, so adding
ML>> the adjective causes a redundancy, that's my issue.
NB>> True. Even as I typed, I did think, its origin is Russian... but
NB>> it's been pretty much adopted in most of the western world...
NB>> Agreed on the redundancy... :)
ML> It might not be a redundancy were it nonrussian Stroganoff.

And what would a nonrussion Stroganoff look like...?

ML> Sort of like American chop suey (now Chinese chop suey
ML> would be not a redundancy but an oxymoron).

Chop suey being an american invention to begin with, even if the story
is true about it being a Chinese chow wagon cook that came up with
it.... ;)

ML>> Generally speaking it does not contain Coca-Cola, that's my
 ML>> other issue. Nor ketchup:
NB>> A truly valid issue, to my mind.. :) The ketchup containing
NB>> recipe seemed a waste of good tenderloin... (G)
ML> A lot of Graham Kerr's recipes were just plain insane.

As I told Ruth, I have a cookbook of his on my shelf... I don't recall
ever trying to fix anything out of it, though... And looked at it so
long ago, I don't even have a clue what's in it now... ;)
