=============================
Hi Nancy,

RH> As hard as you try to be neat, there will always be a few stray crumbs
RH> getting out. Could be there weren't enough for your folks to worry
RH> about cleaning out the car every so often.

NB> Probably not that many crumbs... and every so often the car needed
NB> cleaning out anyway... more likely with a whisk broom, though... ;)

That's probably what my dad used to clean our family car with too but
Steve uses a vaccuum cleaner. I don't recall too many times when we ate
in the car when I was growing up tho.

NB> kids, and NB>> then six, during those years... ;) No changes of
NB> things... and, as I said, just NB>> having bread made for less mess
 NB> likely...

RH> True, 2 are a lot less to look after than 5 or 6. Our girls were small
RH> enough that a couple of changes of clothes could be tucked into the
RH> diaper (or another) bag without taking up too much room. I'd had
RH> enough times when a change was needed but not available that I started
RH> packing one, just in case, early on.

NB> I think there was probably only a change for the baby, whoever that
NB> might have been at each time... ;)

Most likely as babies aren't known for keeping neat & clean. (G)

RH> Mom did the ham with a time-bake oven but a roast beef was done in the
RH> electric fry pan. She may have gotten a smaller cut than your folks
RH> since ours only went for two meals, and maybe a lunch for Dad.

NB> I'd bet that ours was as small or smaller... our meat portions were
 NB> pretty small... ;)

I couldn't say; our portions seemed small at the time. Dad was/is a meat
and potatoes eater and figuring the cost of meat to feed 7 people on one
not so big income, he probably stretched the portions as far as he
could. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the roast beefs actually went
for 3 meals.

NB> clove NB>> at each intersection... then often brown sugar was patted
NB> down over NB>> the top... I'm sure that lasted forever, too... we
 NB> didn't get
 NB> RH>> large portions...

RH> We didn't get large portions either, and if we wanted 2nds on meat, we
RH> had to have vegetable or potatoes as well, with it. Most often tho,
RH> 2nds were only available for the latter 2 items.

NB> We didn't get seconds on meat... and rarely on anything else... meat
NB> got put away, and everything else got dished out first time round...
NB> Daddy served all the plates from his end of the table.. rarely did we
 NB> get to
NB> dish out our own portions... We could make requests as he was serving

I'm sure Mom & Dad portioned out for us until we were old enough to dish
up our own. I think they let us take our own as a time saver, so all of
us would be eating while the food was at serving temperature.

NB> (particularly no-thank-you portioning, if appropriate), but that was
NB> about it. Whoever was cooking might be helping him dish out things
NB> like the salad or equivalent...

We had to take a proper serving, no "no thank you" portioning allowed.
The only thing we were allowed to turn down was dessert. I changed a lot
of my eating habits when I went to college, then got married.

NB> a bit of a NB>> novelty. It also was very good food... the standard
NB> never since met by NB>> any other Chinese buffet place... :)

RH> It also gave you a chance to talk without the time taken away in the
RH> kitchen for your last minute prep work.

NB> That too... Although, had we happened to be having people over,
NB> visiting tended to happen in the kitchen during prep anyway...

It would have been hard in the kitchen at my folks house. The one here
isn't too much better but the house we're buying has one that is a lot
more condusive to poeple visiting while food is being prepped/served.

NB> RH>> text chat in the next couple of days to set things up.
NB> NB>> That can work. :) Hopefully it will come off just as hoped
 NB> for... :)

RH> Now put off until next week, at least, depending on schedules.

NB> Oh, well... we know this routine... ;)

Trying to mesh schedules is always interesting.

NB> RH>> Maybe, but it sounded like he knew what couscous was.
NB> NB>> Maybe he'd only heard of it, never tried it... ;)

RH> I've no idea but it's something we've eaten for years now.

NB> Some people have had more exposure to things than others... ;)

Yes, some by choice, others by upbringing.

Catch you later,
