============
Hi Janis,

JK> I'm > skeptical about now (and if the chickens are raised disease
JK> free, it's > not an issue) is the use of a raw egg.

JK> So far, it hasn't been an issue.. I guess I figure if I'm not buying
JK> cheaper eggs, they'll be safe. Not really a good way to think, I
 JK> suppose.

Not sure if that passes the sense check or not. (G) When I buy eggs, I
always open the carton to check for cracked or sticking to the carton
eggs. If there's even one, that carton is rejected and I'll check
another one. It also gives me a chance to look at the overall condition
of the eggs; if they look dirty, I don't want them. So far we've not
gotten sick from bad eggs.

>> Yep, that's about it.. 3-5 minutes I'd guess. Whatever time it takes
>> is very short anyway (g).

JK> > Clean up takes almost as long as making it. Easiest way to clean up
JK> is > put some water & dish soap into the blender, then give it a
JK> whirl. Dump > out, rinse the jar (Steve holds it upside down with the
 JK> sink sprayer
JK> > shooting into it to rinse.) and you're done.

JK> Yes, that's the best way. It sure beats trying to stick your hand in
JK> the blender jar with a sponge, or whatever and getting poked with the
JK> sharp blades of the blender :) :) (I had a friend who always

One thing I like about the Oster is that it disassembles easily so I do
take it apart for cleaning just about all the time. Less chance of
getting stabbed by an errant blade if I know where it is in the dish
water.

JK> complained about that (g)). I used my blender a lot when the kids were
JK> toddlers, making baby food. Now they have all these baby food
JK> contraptions (g). Anyway, once you start using a blender a lot,
JK> cleaning it as you describe is really the only way to go :)

I used both a blender and one of those food grinder things to make baby
food. The only one we bought was cereal. Saved a lot of time & money we
didn't have. When I gave away my Kitchen Center, I kept the one food
proccessor type attachment; it fits on the Oster blender base so we use
it for making chopped ham and other goodies.

>> > Duke's. Now I'll either buy Duke's or the Whole Foods 365 organic.

JK> This week I bought a new kind, it's really good. It's made by
JK> Spectrum. I use all their vinegars because they are gluten free, and
JK> corn free so they work well when I'm cooking food for my daughter's
 JK> family.

I know I've seen it in Whole Foods but not tried it. We have tried their
solid shortening; it's good for baking when I don't want a butter taste.
We also use a little on our cast iron after cleaning them to keep them
seasoned.

>> When I'm making coleslaw or such, I make my own. Sometimes I buy
>> hellman's just for sandwiches like when we're going to have blt's :)
>> It's just nice to know if you run out of Hellman's you can just make
>> more (g).

JK> > As long as you have all the ingredients, go for it. In the summer, I
JK> > always make sure I've got an extra jar of mayo in the pantry. The
JK> > current in use one is about 1/4 full tho, so I doubt I'll buy
JK> another > before we start travelling.

JK> I always have olive oil, eggs, and spice jar's worth of mustard powder
JK> here it seems :) Now lemon juice I can run out of, and that's a drag
JK> sometimes, but then I'll just use white vinegar.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, we've got white and cider, red wine, malt, rice,
white and regular (brown) balsamic vinegars on hand, wonder what some of
them would taste like in mayo.

>> > We've looked at the Ninjas but have pretty much stuck with Oster.
>> Are > they really that much better? How versatile are they?

>> It's a lot better than my current Oster blender.. I like it quite a
>> bit.

JK> > Might check it out when the current Oster dies. One thing I've
JK> always > liked about the Oster is the mini blend jars; they're really
JK> good for > the small jobs.

JK> I liked mine as well .. they're great for making peanut butter.

We don't go thru a lot of peanut butter now that the girls are gone so
most of the time we get it at Whole Foods. Steve likes their fresh
ground almond butter, as well as their peanut butter.

JK> > I use them to make my bread crumbs as I can't put too
JK> > much bread in a jar at a time & expect it to "crumb" evenly. I'd end
JK> up > with some big pieces, some extra fine so the mini blend and
 JK> pulsing work > well.

JK> yes, it does work well. I haven't tried the Ninja on making bread
JK> crumbs yet. That could be another good thing to experiment with at the
 JK> picnic.

Wish we could be there but we'll be having our own fun in PA that week
end.
