-=> Quoting MICHAEL LOO to NANCY BACKUS on 08 Jul 13 10:25:00 <=-

NB>> hated it mostly because of the nasty stuff one got in the hospital, of
NB>> which she was a regular visitor... We rarely got the elite versions
NB>> of gelatin foods or desserts, the occasional aspic perhaps... :)
ML> I welcomed even those, but my interaction with gelatin in
ML> hospitals usually has come after a period of deprivation.

My interaction with it in hospitals has tended to be less than pleasant,
as well, but that's mostly because it isn't something that my empty
stomach will willingly deal with nicely... and it's usually the first
thing proffered after coming out of anesthesia... crackers and
gingerale are safer for me... :)

NB>>> Definitely interesting... ;) But it's not found Ed... (G)
ML>> I've quit looking, and anyhow he's my age, if he's alive,
ML>> so close to retirement age anyhow.
NB>> From the sound of it, his being alive is a fairly big IF... but
 NB>> you never know... :)

ML> I hate to say it, not being much of a religionist, but
ML> pretty much the only hope for people in his condition of
ML> life has been the Salvation Army or similar, and he
ML> didn't seem to be the type - too self-destructive.

Kinda what I was gathering from your descriptions...

NB>> Apparently business was sufficiently slow on the day after the
NB>> holiday that they found it expeditious to vacate...

ML> But it shouldn't be a business decision: the place's only
ML> business is selling the local transit authority's passes,
ML> as a public service. Unfortunately the transit authority
ML> has outsourced to a private company, so instead of getting
 ML> grudging to-the-letter and to-the-minute government service
ML> you get grudging short-changing the government free enterprise
ML> - I would venture a guess that these people did not tell the
ML> transit authority that they were playing hooky.

Probably not... their own bosses probably okayed it, didn't bother
checking up the line...

 NB>> did the excellent
NB>> potato chips make up for the unremarkable meat...?
ML> Almost - Lilli insisted on taking the leftovers back to her room,
ML> and we ate them two days later. They were still pretty good.

So something good came of it. :)

NB>> Or, perhaps more to the point, was the meat at least reasonably
 NB>> edible and sustaining...? :)
ML> It was okay - the pulled pork (hers) almost half a pound of
ML> probably steamed pork tossed with slightly too much of that
ML> sweet sauce; my extra-fatty brisket was pretty fatty meat
ML> that I thought more like corned beef than barbecue, of a
ML> strange texture (no grain to speak of, having been obviously
ML> brined before cooking and sliced the wrong way to after),
ML> and slathered with the sauce, which made it too sweet as
ML> well as too salty. Nothing to order again.

Now you know. :)

-=> Nancy Backus said to Burton Ford <=-

NB>> Today's samplings were the pork scraps in black bean sauce, shu mai,
NB>> shrimp dumplings, baked pork buns, baked custard buns, pearly rice
NB>> (rice with meats/shrimp steamed in big leaves), leek cakes, sesame
NB>> balls and egg custards... along with a big bowl of pork and preserved
NB>> egg congee, and of course tea...
ML> Looks like the typical southern meal except there are usually
ML> more vegetables - gai lan with oyster sauce or bok choy in that
ML> gloopy white stuff for example.

We got there a bit on the later side, and except for the congee, only
grabbed stuff from the carts. If they'd had a plate of eggplant, we'd
have taken that, too... but there wasn't any... I think there are more
veggie offerings from the other side of the dim sum menu...

ML> What your place calls "pearly rice" is generally known by the less
ML> picturesque name "doong," transliterated as "dump."

I don't know what the Chinese characters call it... By any name it is
quite tasty... :) (Before figuring out what it was on the menu, we
always called it the leaf wrappers thing... [g])

NB>> ... Everybody wants something that somebody else has.
ML> Oddly, I have pretty much everything I want.

Actually, that's pretty much the case for me, too... :)

ttyl neb

... AHA!!! I've finally got this ficts, fics, fixd...sigh.
