=============================
Hi Nancy,

NB> RH>> Yes, we enjoyed it. There was a bit of talk about doing
NB> something RH>> again, maybe in the spring.
NB> NB>> Hopefully it will get past the talk stage... :)

RH> We'll see. Then too, always the possibility we won't be around for it.

NB> One never really knows.. :) It would be a nice thing for the
NB> neighborhood, whether or not you two are still around... ;)

Yes, it's something that probably should be done on a regular basis.
There's just enough turnover in some of the housing that it would be
good to get to know the new folks.

NB> NB>> That makes it convenient... :) When we had the block party, it
NB> was NB>> just held in the street, with it blocked off from traffic...
NB> spilled NB>> into the front yards and onto the sidewalk of course...

RH> As is to be expected with a block party..........central area for the
RH> grilling station. The rest of the food is either there or scattered
RH> around the neighborhood. Most times I think it's not too far from the
 RH> grilling area.

NB> The food was pretty much altogether, as I recall... but we did take
NB> over the whole block pretty much for the party otherwise... :)

Presumably with the city's permission......

NB> NB>> Some communities are more out-going than others... :) Kids are
 NB> often NB>> a great ice-breaker... :)

RH> Very much so--when we moved in our rental in Copperas Cove, TX (near
RH> Fort Hood), a couple of little boys came over within the hour. A while
RH> later, a mom came to the door asking if we had any little boys that
RH> didn't belong to us. That's how we met the first neighbors; the next
RH> ones were playmates of the first set of boys so we met them quickly
 RH> too.

NB> That sounds like a mom that expected her kids to be outgoing... ;)
NB> And knew what the magnets were for them... ;)

New kids to play with! Mom didn't know if we had boys or girls when she
came over but soon found out. The girls were basically the same ages as
both sets of boys they played with--and didn't get into boy's vs girls
games. Deborah regularly played with trucks with one of them.

NB> Otherwise, the NB>> biggest change is usually the aging out and
NB> selling to young families NB>> who then grow old in place and end up
NB> selling to a young family years NB>> later... ;)

RH> In my and Steve's families cases, the family home was sold within the
RH> family. My brother that bought it is single; Steve's brother was
RH> married (no children) but when he passed away, his wife sold the
RH> house. Don't know what my brother will do when he gets older.

NB> Yeah, that happens too.. :) Didn't really happen in my family... but
NB> then, we'd moved around so much when I was growing up that there
NB> wasn't really a family home, just the last place where they'd settled
NB> somewhat... that pretty much happened for the preceding generations as
NB> well... both sets of grandparents had a similar pattern... Richard's
NB> mom's house got sold, we already had this house in Rochester, and his
NB> brother already owned a house in the Syracuse area... the grandkids
NB> weren't in the market yet either, so that one left the family too...

Steve and I are the only ones that don't have our own home among our
siblings. (His widowed sister in law lives with her sister & mom.) Our
girls have their own places too; we might, eventually.

NB> RH>> We learned about Korean food from a neighbor in Fort Hood--he'd
NB> RH>> married a Korean woman and our kids played together. She gave us
NB> RH>> our first taste (but not our last) of Korean home cooking.
NB> NB>> Was that before or after Steve had TDY in Korea...?

RH> He did a 3 week TDY to Korea in March of 1986. We'd moved into that
RH> house the previous November but I don't remember exactly when we met
 RH> the neighbors.

NB> So both original Korean influences were about the same time...

About that, yes. We enjoyed it so sought it out from time to time after
moving away.

RH> His PCS to Korea was in March of 1996 while we were in
RH> AZ--and he PCSed back to AZ in March of 1997.

NB> Ah, ten years later... and at that time, not a new experience... :)

No, not at all. One time while we were at Fort Devens (MA), Steve took
me to a Korean place for lunch. All the other "round eyes" in there were
GIs; I was the only spouse. In January when we visited the Fort
Huachuca/Sierra Vista area, we went back to the Korean place we'd gone
to in town. Still good meals and enough food for take home boxes too.

Catch you later,
Ruth
