Coventry wasn't exactly a 'small residential town.'  FWIW, the Brits knew
what the target was because they could read the German radio traffic.  They
allowed the Germans to hit Coventry because they felt that a major defensive
effort there would have tipped off the Germans that the Brits were reading
their
codes.

The war in the Pacific was already effectively over when the nukes were
dropped.
Japanese air and naval power had been destroyed, the major portion of their
remaining
effective ground combat forces were on the Chinese mainland with no way to
return
them to Japan.  Over 2/3 of the pre-war Japanese merchant fleet was on the
bottom
of the ocean.  It would have been perfectly feasible to starve Japan into
surrender.
FWIW, Japan had already made overtures WRT ending the Pacific war before the
nukes were dropped - unfortunately the US didn't find out about it until about
9
months after the war had ended (details in "The Codebreakers" by David Kahn).
