Ärende: Proposal for F2EP abbreviation
======================================
Hi, Alexander! Focusing on punctuation here:

AH> Adding to what Dallas said... the exclamation mark is
AH> usually used at the end of a sentence, in much the same
AH> way a period or a question mark is.

AK> "Usually used" is not a rule?

          Unlike some folks, I make a distinction between "usually" and
"always"
... especially when I'm addressing comments to advanced students like you! As
a child and/or a beginning student of English one may hear certain
generalizations presented as "rules". Many of these "rules" work only as long
as the vocabulary & sentence structure are very simple, however, and very
strictly controlled. In the big world outside the textbook there may be all
sorts of exceptions....  :-)

AK> It seems to me I saw somewhere sentences where
AK> capital letters were not put after the '!'.

          Uh-huh. Dallas did that with an interjection from one of your
earlier messages. Here are some more examples:

             Her name is Cynthia -- no, my mistake! -- it's Christina.
             "Help!" screamed the fair maiden, as the dragon approached.
             We went to a stage production of _Oklahoma!_ yesterday.

AK> Actually it's like using ';' or ',' when dividing
AK>  sentences inside complex sentence.

          Sometimes it can be. But in all the examples I can think of where
the next word isn't capitalized there is something else indicating the writer
hasn't finished the sentence... a change of print style or additional
punctuation. And the lack of a capital letter may also show the sentence is to
be continued.  :-)

AK>   =========Beginning of the citation==============
AK> Each punctuation mark is introduced in turn; its
AK> proper use is described with the aid of lots of
AK> examples; wherever possible I give you some simple
AK> rules for checking your punctuation.
AK>  =========The end of the citation================

AK> We put ';' to show that it is one long sentence,
AK> although it consists of three.

          The sentence consists of three *clauses*. Each of these clauses
could be a sentence by itself. In informal writing it's more usual & quite
acceptable to use shorter, simpler sentences. In formal writing, however, the
author might use one (or more) semicolons to indicate that certain ideas are
related....  :-)

AK> What the difference between '!' and ';'?
      | What is the difference

AK>  Can I in principal
              | principle ("principal" has a different meaning)

AK> write sentence after '!' without a capital
           | a sentence

AK>  letter? What about '?'

          "Martha, my dearest, will you marry me?" asked Henry.

AK> Or may be it is better always follow the strict rule
AK>  that after '?', '!' I must put a word with a capital
AK> letter and to begin, in this way, a new sentence.

          It may be safer. But one of the saddest things I ever saw, when I
was teaching school, was a neatly laid out composition in beautiful handwriting
with no errors. What made me sad was that the author didn't seem to have
anything to say! I encourage my students to take the risk of trying new
constructions.  ;-)
