You would think so, but let's stick with this thought a moment.

IF you have a clone of a movie that somehow you have obtained and not paid
for and subsequently view,  the the following would be true.

The movie was produced at some expense to the Production Company.

The Production Company expects to make a profit from the sale and distribution
of the movie, exceeding the producation costs (excepting Ishtar).

THe Production Company recieves payment from the distrbutor who then copies
(legally) the movie for sale, keeping a portion of the sale-price for
themselves, too.

If the movie is shown on television, then it's also probably been released to
the video/dvd market for sale.

Every Cloned copy of a movie is a copy that falls outside of the revenue
stream of the above system. In other words, the people that make the film and
distribute it are not being paid for their efforts.

Similar to you not being paid by your company for work you do, that's not
fair.

Now, when it comes to home recording of something that's broadcast, that's
slightly different, I think at least it is in this country. as TV is "free"
(in the sense that we don't have to pay a tax or license for viewing, like
some places) If it's brought to your home and you take the time to record it
for later viewing, yes, the company is not out money because they have already
been paid for that broadcast. If it's on a cable system, (HBO  for example)
then thay have been paid by the HBO-people, and your portion comes out of the
cable bill fees that they charge you per month.

But...

If you have a "bootleg" copy of a movie that falls out of the sky into your
possession from someplace that the company that made it has not been
recompensed for in some way, then yes, that's wrong, that's piracy. Someone
else, somwhere has made money from this copy, and it's not going back to the
people that actually produced the feature...

Does this track well enough for you. the answe is YEs, and No, depending..

And does not even approach the problem of copyright violations...


Several years ago a step-son of mine bought a bootlegged copy of a movie, that
was shot in a theater with a hand-held camera and then copied to VHS, and sold
on the street for US$10.

That's a clear vilation of the law, even though it's done all the imt,e
apparantly, and is one of the things the film folk are upset about. Ripped
copied of any work like that fall in the same basic catagory, where the
methodology is different but the effect is the same, the people doing the work
are not getting paid..
