MV> I don't understand why this is so hard for you to understand.

And I don't understand why you keep assuming that I wanted to say the IMEI MUST
be CONTINUOUSLY transmitted throughout a transmission. That isn't what I wanted
to say, and I thought I explained that clearly enough.

MV> Same for the IMEI. Of course one needs the handshake to initiate the
MV> call. But the IMEI is an optional field, the information it contains
MV> it not needed to make the call.

So again, how do you make a call without initiating it? And IF the IMEI IS
necessary to initiate a call, how can it be considered "optional"?

RB>>>> With the proper interface

MV>>> Nothing special, just a standard data cable.

RB>> ;-))) Who told you that one? Sorry, I know better.

MV> As I said, I saw it demonstated. Not on television, in real life.
MV> Standard data cable.

COM to what? Cell phones don't have COM inputs, at least no cell phones I've
ever seen. That's why you need a COM to interface cable for the pertinanet
phone. Aside from which, what are you calling a "standard data cable" anyway?
That would be COM to COM, maybe a null modem cable or something like that. But
where's the cell phone with that kind of an interface?

MV>>> Simple is in the eye of the beholder. Once you know how to do it, it
MV>>> is simple.

RB>> Interestingly enough, I've found that's not the case.

MV> Then you had the bad luck of having a phone weher it is not as easy as
MV> the onde I saw in the demonstration.

Possibly. What phone was it exactly? Make, model? I played with one of the
older Nokias, I think a 3210.

RB>> I became intrigued with the idea of removing supervisor passwords on
RB>> Thinkpads (IBM laptops) because so many people forget them, buy used
RB>> laptops from companies with the supervisor passwort set and then
RB>> forgotten and the like.

MV> That is a different kettle of fish from changing the IMEI of a cell
MV> phone. Makes me wonder WHY you wanted to change the IMEI of your
MV> phone....

As I've already explained several times, I comment on what I quote. Your
comment, on which I based my above remark, was:

MV> Simple is in the eye of the beholder. Once you know how to do it, it
MV> ius simple.

To which I replied:

RB> Interestingly enough, I've found that's not the case.

And included the example you quote above. Read what I write in context, not as
isolated snippits, and things will be much more understandable.

As for why I wanted to change the IMEI, quite simple: I wanted to see how it
was done and if I could do it. I like to learn, like with the supervisor
passwords.

RB>> At any rate, there's a website that deals with this subject, and even
RB>> free software to read out the passwords...

MV> Now is that for the thinkpad, or for the cell phone?

Was the above about supervisor passwords for the Thinkpad or about the cell
phone IMEIs? I can't recall even mentioning passwords for cell phones.

Sorry if I sound gruff, Michiel, but I've had quite a workout with the Bandit
today and I'm dead tired and I think your question answers itself if you just
read what I wrote.

For details see: http://www.allservice.ro/forum/viewforum.php?f=12

RB>> Knowing how in theory is nice, but without a bit of practice and
RB>> experience, a lot of people can't duplicate what others can.

MV> Very true. I already found that out 40 years ago. I could not make
MV> electronic stuff to work until I *understood* what I was doing.

Oh, I never claimed to _understand_ how the circuit works or how the program
reads out the supervisor password. But I can follow a simple schematic without
much difficulty (accent on _simple_), which some people apparently find quite
difficult.

The thing that astounded me was that my friend (who had the circuit boards for
the powered interface etched) couldn't use the device properly even after I
made it up (with components) and checked it for him. I have no idea what went
wrong on his side, but it worked fine for me.

Cheers, Bob
