Neat Things You Can Do with Linux
     By Janis Kracht, 1:261/38, janis@filegate.net

In this age of GUI (it seems worse on Linux than ever
before :) ), most people who've been around know that
there's an underlying nice place, waiting for you to
explore ... it's commonly the BASH shell, but there are
     other shells you can install.

So we'll deal with BASH here, since it seems most used.
Open up up a terminal on your linux box, you can use Alt+F2
to bring up konsole (kde's terminal, my favorite), or you
can press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get to a virtual console.

You probably already know about this one:

     cd -

It will take you back to the previous directory you were
in. Type it again, and you'll be back where you started.

Once you've cd'd to somewhere on your drive, you can of
course see what's there with the ls command.. ls -l will
show you information about the FILEs (the current directory by
     default).

     ls -l bbbs*
     bbbscripts:
     total 24K
     -rw-r--r-- 1 bbs bbs 180 2010-09-26 02:01 contents.txt
     -rwxr-xr-x 1 bbs bbs 118 2010-09-26 02:01 mailin.sh
     -rwxr-xr-x 1 bbs bbs 39 2010-09-26 02:01 mailout.sh
     -rwxr-xr-x 1 bbs bbs 1033 2010-09-26 02:01 run1.sh
     -rwxr-xr-x 1 bbs bbs 128 2010-09-26 02:01 telnetnode.sh
     -rwxr-x--x 1 bbs bbs 470 2010-09-26 02:01 testppp

     How Much do I write?
You can use the wc command to find out.

The wc command counts things like words or bytes.

     wc -w *.TXT

will show you the word count on all txt files.
     bbs@filegate:~ wc -w *.txt
       51 wc4code.txt
      306 wcd.txt
      138 web2ldap.txt

     ls -l

Quick, get me out of here Or the ~ switch

All folders or directories live off the / (root) directory.
Your home directory is normally /home/USERNAME

Ok, you've been exploring your hard drive, just looking around
with commands like ls. Now you want to just get to your
     home directory.

     Type cd ~

The ~ notation always refers to your home directory and
using the cd command with ~ will always take you to your
     'username' home.

Type pwd, and bash will show you the name of the directory
     where you are.

     $ pwd
     /home/bbbs/

LS and CD are commands that take arguments. You can see
all of the arguments and switches for these commands with
     --help.

     cd --help
     ls --help

Will show you all the options.

LS lets you add color to your terminal easily.

     ls -l --color="auto"

With color="auto", you'll see binary (executible) files
listed in bright green, directories are bright blue, and
files with no special attitributes set are plain old gray.
     :)

Next time: Paging, more or less
