You need to stop using those inferior banks.

RB> And what did you pay for this service?

Don't remember the exact amount. No more than $5...

RB> The direct account transfers Ward refers to are standard in Europe,

As they are here.

 RB> and cost $0.00.

As they do here. I used to pay my bills by instant transfer, but that
required a needless exposure to hacking my account # and password. I
stopped doing that and returned to writing checks. Checks aren't a problem
here because the Check 21 Act allows the recipient to turn the paper into
an instant cash trensfer, account to account.

The problem arrises when the check (supposedly) doesn't arrive on the
payment 'due date' and they begin to panic and start calling you to make
a credit card payment. I refuse to give them the dis-satisfaction of
saying 'the checks in the mail' and block their number from my phone.

They usually give up when the check arrives and they stop calling. This
last week, I had one anxious payment recipient call me six times just in
one day, 4 times the next and once the day the check must have arrived
(still within the grace period). So, they wasted a computer's time in
making the call, but it was too stupid to leave a message on my answering
machine during any one of those calls. 8^) I can only guess why they
don't waste an employee's time and have them call once and leave a
message. They never learn.

RB> Many banks charge nothing for setting up an account, and no mothly
RB> charge or minimum balance. After you've been a customer for a while -
RB> one to two years - you generally get "overdraft privileges" (also
RB> without charge and often even without specifically requesting them)

I had all of that on the first day I opened my accounts. My overdraft
account is a savings account that I earn interest on. I never let it get
below a certain amount, giving me a big pad for large four figure
purchases if need be.

RB> amounting to 2.5 times the monthly deposits into your account.

That small, eh...

RB> It's all very convenient and quite inexpensive, even mostly without
RB> charge. The banks make most of their money with loans and investments
RB> here, not with various fees on personal accounts as in the States.

I pay a total of $3/mo in fees, not for money transfers, not for loans
(don't need any) and our investments (money market) pay me, not the other
way around. The $3 is for investment guarantee of payment, if I need to
draw an amount that lowers the interest earned on it. Since it's an
elective service and not a set fee, I consider it just another investment
for security reasons.

WD>>> The European banking system is way better and customer friendly
 WD>>> than in North America.

 RW>> LOL! BS!

RB> He didn't mean that the bank personnel all smile at you and tell you
RB> how much they like you at every opportunity - my experience with
 RB> American banks -

He may have experienced American banks, but not as an American citizen. He
experienced them as a foriegner, just like you did.

Time was when I was in business, I got a smile and a hello Mr Witt when I
entered my bank. Today I'm just another customer until I present my bank
card. Then it's a smile and a 'what can I do for you today, Mr Witt'...I
wouldn't expect anything more than that, because even though I'm their
customer, I'm just one who hasn't stepped into the bank in months,.

RB> but that the banks are efficient and fast, and make very few
 RB> mistakes,

I don't find any mistakes in our banking system here. I find more at fault
the company twits who can't keep books properly. AT&T and Dishnet are as
dumb as a log.

RB> in marked contrast to the situation in the States (my experience in
RB> Canada is too old and limited to judge that system).

Your experience is flawed, expecting an American bank to do business your
way.

RB> After experiencing both systems, I have to agree with Ward.

I wouldn't expect anything less, since neither of you have American
citizen written on your forehead in black charcoal.
