Ärende: New Article: SETI @ Your BBS
====================================
Hello Vitus,

VZ> If you like to use the text for the Fidonews feel free to take it :)

VZ> I want to believe - If it is just us... seems like an awful waste of
 VZ> space.

The whole world wants to believe!

http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/news/298338/seti-is-investigating
-interesting-signal

Aliens! Just like in the movies!

VZ> The BlackICE BBS starts the search for extraterrestrial intelligence with
 VZ> the Seti@Home project.

VZ> What is SETI? and SETI@HOME?

These signals are coming from light-years away. But that doesn't
mean the aliens are that far away. In fact, they could be here,
living amongst us, just waiting in hiding for us to come their way.
Just like in the movies. Or was that Predator?

VZ> The search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) is a collective term
VZ> for the scientific search for intelligent extraterrestrial life. For
VZ> example, monitoring electromagnetic radiation for signs of transmissions
VZ> from civilizations on other worlds.

They are out there. But do they want to be found? And should we
be advertising our own presence in the universe? What if those aliens
are evil, and have evil intentions? How would we be able to defend
ourselves? Or would we be able to defend ourselves at all? Perhaps
it might be best for us to remain hidden. If that is at all possible.

VZ> SETI at home is an Internet-based public volunteer computing project.
VZ> Hosted by the Space Sciences Laboratory, at the University of California,
VZ> Berkeley - USA. Its purpose is to analyze radio signals, searching for
VZ> signs of extraterrestrial intelligence capture by the Arecibo radio
 VZ> telescope.

The signals noted in the above article were found over a year ago.
They are being studied, and analyzed, and widely believed to be alien
in nature. Assuming it is a sign of intelligent life, what should be
our next step? Just keep looking to find what other signals might
be out there?

VZ> Observational data are recorded on 2-terabyte SATA hard disk drives at the
VZ> Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, each holding about 2.5 days of
VZ> observations, which are then sent to Berkeley. Arecibo does not have a
VZ> broadband Internet connection, so data must go by postal mail to Berkeley.

Why go postal to Berkeley? Certainly others around the world are
able to analyze such data. Seems a better method could be found.

VZ> Once there, it is divided in both time and frequency domains work units of
VZ> 107 seconds of data, or approximately 0.35 megabytes (350 kilobytes or
VZ> 350,000 bytes), which overlap in time but not in frequency. These work
VZ> units are then sent from the SETI@home server over the Internet to
VZ> personal computers around the world to analyze.

How many foot soldiers does an army need to invade a territory?
Is it the number of soldiers, or the quality of soldiers, that is
more important? A well-equipped, and well-trained army is more
effective than an ill-equipped, and non-trained army. Even if the
numbers are small, a well-equipped and well-trained army will win
the day over a large army that is ill-equipped and not prepared.

VZ> And the BlackICE BBS spends now a part of its CPU time to the Seti@Home
VZ> Project. The installed Software, called BOINC can be scaled in many ways.
VZ> The Board or other processes running on that machine are not affected with
 VZ> the higher CPU load.

While the intent may be good, it should be kept in mind there are
dangers of making contact involved. If Luigi puts a sign on his back
that says "Shoot me!" and an enemy soldier shoots him, he gets what
he is asking for. Any higher civilization than ours would know
better than to make that mistake.

VZ> Of course, you can watch the status in the BlackICE BBS itself. You will
VZ> find a new entry under the SysInfo-Menue!

I hope that new entry is not named Luigi.

VZ> If you're also want to compute for SETI visit this webpage: http://
 VZ> setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/

Better to let Antonio do the honors. He not quite as bright as Luigi.

VZ> If you're a SySoP and like also to show your running tasks with boinc, use
VZ> the 'boinccmd --get_tasks' command to print out the status. You'll find
VZ> the boinccmd executive file in your Boinc install directory.

Why should sysops get to have all the fun? Others might also
want to play. Such as Giuseppi ...

VZ> Running Windows? Try 'boinccmd --get_tasks >tasks.txt'. That will create a
VZ> file named tasks.txt with all Boinc taskinfos in it.

Oh where oh where did Sophia go?

 VZ> Happy computing!

Buon appetito!

Now where did I put my biscotti?
