And the necessity of compatibility with old software is questionable. In WWW,
the transition from the text browser to Mosaic in 1993 was amazingly fast, near
30% of Web users in the first month. The transition from Mosaic to Netscape in
late 1994 and early 1995 was almost equally fast, about 25% per month; several
months after the release the portion of Netscape reached 80%, according to some
statistics by Jacob Nielsen (Nielsen Norman Group).

(And we'd admit that Netscape browser wasn't open source and wasn't free of
charge, except maybe for universities, as far as I recall. Modern Fidonet soft
is open and free.)

Probably, if Fidonet becomes hypertext, just providing a really good hypertext
open-source free fidobrowser is enough. Everybody would just change their soft,
thank the developers, and the old software would quickly become abandonware ÄÄ
like NCSA Mosaic is now. Though I can mention some features of NCSA Mosaic that
are absent in modern browsers like Mozilla Firefox (if a specific extension is
not installed), or like Microsoft Internet Explorer. For example, NCSA Mosaic
rendered link types (see section 6.12 of HTML 4.01) as a special navigation bar
in the browser.
