Ärende: Fighting Spam
=====================
FV>> the IP (aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd) is blocked and the next poor person
FV>> that gets that dynamic address is just screwed.

ml>> that sounds like you've run into problems with RBLs that list
ml>> dialup ip blocks... it is not necessarially a specific ip that
ml>> is blocked... many times it is the entire block of addresses
ml>> that belong to a specific entity...

FV> My IP address is dynamic. More than once I've tried to send
FV> mail only to find that my IP is blocked by a blacklist server
FV> and I can't send or receive. A quick disconnect and reconnect
FV> to my DSL fixed the problem. New IP address = no block,
 FV> sometimes. :)

yeah, see, you are using the old ways that the spammers have abused... its
called direct to destination rather than to your ISP's SMTP server and let it
forward it on... that what the description appears to be saying, anyway... that
is one method of blocking, too... these days, it is better to send all your
mail via your ISP's SMTP server and not worry about your systems trying to
connect directly to the destination...

FV> Joe Jarred was one example. When he left, lots of people got
 FV> blocked.

when he left what/where? i know that he was highly involved with stuff on both,
fidonet and the internet... i also know that he stopped his RBL service due to
the spammers DDOSing him right off the network...

FV> So far, I've dropped most of the blacklist servers
FV> that were included with my BBS program.

there are only a few, in my mind, that are worth using... spamcop.net being
one... i have one of my systems using spamcop.net, SORBS, and one other RBL in
addition to the brightmail service that my ISP uses... if i adjust the setting
on my account so that brightmail isn't filtering, my spam level jumps from ~10
a day on a busy day to over 400 a day on an average day...

FV>> There's little to nothing about caring to stop the spammer.
FV>> just stop the spam and lit the kiddies continue.

ml>> that's a social problem and falls right back on the users who
ml>> don't want to learn how the stuff works and do their part to
ml>> stop the abuse... truth be told, they are just as abusive as
ml>> the spammers they complain about ;)

FV> Not really. Do you know the exact specifications of everything
 FV> you use??

quite a bit, actually... i'm just one of those folk ;)

FV> How about how to fly the jet you ride in?

i haven't flown a plane in over 20 years but i used to fly in a simulator quite
regularly... still would if i could find the software i had and it would work
on the machines i have today ;) ;)

 FV> Can you maintain it?

not without some additional training and assistance but i could make a decent
start at it <<GG>>

FV> Users are just that. They have more to do than learn how
FV> the e-mail headers work and what all the crap means. Just
FV> like people don't learn how the jet airplane works or how
FV> to rebuild their car engine.

i do that, too ;)

FV> It would be nice if all the people in the world knew
FV> everything about everything, but that's not reality.

no doubt... it is also one of the reasons why we see some of the flames in
fidonet and other places that we do ;)

FV> I'm sure that the airlines would have no problem if you
FV> wanted to disassemble their plane and check for problems
FV> before you boarded it. :)

hahaha... right...

FV>> Given time, every possible IP address, domain and e-mail
FV>> address will be blocked by every isp and/or smtp/pop server.
FV>> E-mail will stop and the internet will die! I can't wait!!

ml>> hahaha... somehow, i doubt that that will ever really happen OB-)

FV> Me too... but I can hope. :)

not me, i don't hope for that any more than i would wish some kind of major
problem on my worst enemy...
