Ärende: Fighting Spam
=====================

Hello mark,

If only it really worked that way. If one accepts that the Internet is
one big community, then some of my neighbors are spamers. Others
provide access to my neighborhood for spamers to enter. It's not
like they were coming from "outside" my neighborhood. <evil grin>

FV> The ISPs don't expect anyone to learn this stuff.
 ml> sure they do...

The ISPs are reactionary. Complaints come in and they react. Combine
that with the bottom line, which is profit margin, and you are right.
The ISPs offer the filters because the users (people in my Internet
neighborhood) don't want, or have time, to learn this stuff and the
cost of having dozens of employees to track spam would prevent
undercutting of competitors. I'm not really kicking the ISPs and such.
They have to make a living too. Just stating what I see.

FV> the IP (aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd) is blocked and the next poor person
FV> that gets that dynamic address is just screwed.
ml> that sounds like you've run into problems with RBLs that list dialup
ml> ip blocks... it is not necessarially a specific ip that is blocked...
ml> many times it is the entire block of addresses that belong to a
 ml> specific entity...

My IP address is dynamic. More than once I've tried to send mail only
to find that my IP is blocked by a blacklist server and I can't send
or receive. A quick disconnect and reconnect to my DSL fixed the
problem. New IP address = no block, sometimes. :) Joe Jarred was one
example. When he left, lots of people got blocked. So far, I've
dropped most of the blacklist servers that were included with my BBS
program.

FV> There's little to nothing about caring to stop the spammer.
FV> just stop the spam and lit the kiddies continue.
ml> that's a social problem and falls right back on the users who don't
ml> want to learn how the stuff works and do their part to stop the
ml> abuse... truth be told, they are just as abusive as the spammers they
 ml> complain about ;)

Not really. Do you know the exact specifications of everything you
use?? How about how to fly the jet you ride in? Can you maintain it?
Users are just that. They have more to do than learn how the e-mail
headers work and what all the crap means. Just like people don't learn
how the jet airplane works or how to rebuild their car engine. It
would be nice if all the people in the world knew everything about
everything, but that's not reality. I'm sure that the airlines would
have no problem if you wanted to disassemble their plane and check for
problems before you boarded it. :)

FV> Given time, every possible IP address, domain and e-mail
FV> address will be blocked by every isp and/or smtp/pop server.
FV> E-mail will stop and the internet will die! I can't wait!!
ml> hahaha... somehow, i doubt that that will ever really happen OB-)

Me too... but I can hope. :)

Regards,
Frank
