Ärende: Fighting Spam
=====================
On (03 Feb 05) Gerald Miller wrote to Frank Vest...

Hello Gerald,

GM> GM>>> I don't remember if I replied to this message or not....
 GM> FV>> Me neither. :)
 GM> GM>> I'm getting old. What's your excuse? <g>
 FV> Same. :)
GM> Too soon we get old, too late we get smart. ;-))

Therory:
We gain most of our intelegence from birth until puberty. At puberty,
we are almost all knowing. The problem is that there is a block which
prevents us from using the knowledge and gaining more knowledge. It is
called a harmone. In the male, this is testosterone.

As we age, the level of this harmone drops and we regain the ability
to use the knowledge we gained from birth until puberty. Also, we
regain some ability to learn and increase our knowledge. This make us
appear to be smarter than we really are/were.

Now, since every person's harmone level drops at different rates
durring their life, it is easy to see why some people appear to be,
and in some cases are, smarter than others.

The conclusing to this (and I hope I don't get moderated) is that men
who are smart have no balls. :-))

<Note: This is an original therory. I dreamed it up and wrote it on my
own on the fly just now.>

<Sub Note: Yes, I know I'm a sick puppy. And!!??>
:-))

GM> FV>> Possible. Problem is that some of the spam comes from out off
GM> the FV>> USA. The FBI won't be able to do much about that, I think.
GM> GM>> That's the same reason I won't send reports to them and for the
GM> GM>> fact that they have no jurisdiction in Canada so they're
GM> unlikely GM>> to read anything I may send to them.
FV> If it originated in the USA, I'd think that they would be interested.
 FV> <shrug> I don't know.
GM> I have sent the headers of a few spam messages to the R.C.M.P. (Royal
GM> Canadian Mounted Police) and I'm not likely to waste my time with them
GM> again. They told me to ignore the messages from the spammers as they
GM> were scams. I guess I was hoping they were going to tell me something
GM> that I didn't already know or at least mount their horses and go get
 GM> the 'Baddies'...

I suppose the spam would have to be illegal in some way.. IE: A con,
or attempt to get passwords or such. I seems that just advertising is
not considered that much of a crime. <shrug>

FV> This new IP addressing sounds great. I jiust wonder how it's going to
FV> integrate with older stuff (software).
GM> Apparently, it is _supposed_ to be backward compatible with the
GM> current IPv4 addressing. I did a "ipv6 install" on my Win XPP box and
GM> forgot to uninstall after I was through 'playing' with it -- didn't
 GM> appear to
GM> adversely affect the operation of XP; still got my e-mail, surfed the
GM> web, etc. I finally caught my 'mistake' and uninstalled it because

My concern was with my (continued) use of Win98 for my BBS. I really
don't want to upgrade in a forced manner.

FV> Fido (Fidonet) Technical Network. Not just Fidonet, but any network
FV> that uses the Fidonet technology to transport mail/files and such.
FV> It's more generic and covers more area. :)
GM> Awwww. My mind is going on me. You would have thought I would know
GM> that acronym since I am a member of Fidonet... :-((

Many don't catch that. Just as the initials (I think I coined it
originally) FSP=Fidonet Service Provider go over heads. To me, it
means a Sysop that has a Fidonet Node number and provides the Fidonet
message service to the community or to users via a BBS, QWK or Point.

GM> Your P200 MMX / 128MB system sounds exactly like my dedicated
GM> DOS/Wfw311 Fidonet mailer system. The only difference is that I don't
GM> trust W98 to 'munge' up my 16-bit DOS box with long file names. And,
GM> I only use Wfw311 to copy my DOS files to either of the XPP / W98
GM> boxes so I can burn some rewritable CD-ROM backup disks -- all CAT5.
GM> You should hear some of the flak I get for my use of Windows for
 GM> Workgroup v3.11.... :-))

If it works, use it! I have a p133 that runs the dial-up line via
Taurus mailer and the "dialuptotelnet" program. It's not a real
powerhouse system, but for one dial-up line and a DNS updater, it does
fine.

I had a Dos system online for a while that used Dos 6.20, Desqview and
the WFWG Add-on. It was networked with the rest of the Lan and had few
problems.

FV> I do have a HW router and the stuff to convert to CAT5, but I'm
FV> waiting until I rearrange the house and put the computers in a room of
 FV> their own. :)
GM> Get one of the kids some luggage for their birthday and you will soon
GM> have a room for the computers. <vBg>

One is moving. It's just slow. :)

GM> Since I'm running all three computers via cable hookup, they are all
GM> online all the time and it's unlikely I require ICS. I was thinking
GM> there was something available to test which ports are open and close
 GM> the unnecessary ones....

There are a lot of way to locate open ports. There is one program
called Port Detective that I have used. There's also the
http://grc.com site (Shields Up) and the DSL Reports site just to name
two. These will scan your system for open ports and other possible
security problems. Shields Up site is free. The other is limited.

Also, the Trend Micro site offers a free online virus scan.
"trendmicro.com".

Frank
