Ärende: Fighting Spam
=====================
Hello Frank,

Responding to a post in the INTERNET area:

 FV> Same. :)

Too soon we get old, too late we get smart. ;-))

FV>> Possible. Problem is that some of the spam comes from out off the

GM>> That's the same reason I won't send reports to them and for the

FV> If it originated in the USA, I'd think that they would be interested.
 FV> <shrug> I don't know.

I have sent the headers of a few spam messages to the R.C.M.P. (Royal
Canadian Mounted Police) and I'm not likely to waste my time with them
again. They told me to ignore the messages from the spammers as they were
scams. I guess I was hoping they were going to tell me something that I
didn't already know or at least mount their horses and go get the
'Baddies'...

FV> This new IP addressing sounds great. I jiust wonder how it's going to
FV> integrate with older stuff (software).

Apparently, it is _supposed_ to be backward compatible with the current
IPv4 addressing. I did a "ipv6 install" on my Win XPP box and forgot to
uninstall after I was through 'playing' with it -- didn't appear to
adversely affect the operation of XP; still got my e-mail, surfed the web,
etc. I finally caught my 'mistake' and uninstalled it because the
recommendation was to not use it until it was an official standard.

FV>> While not impossible, FTN systems have a harder time faking the
FV>> FTN address and path. :)
GM>> I'm not online (at this moment), what is FTN?
FV> Fido (Fidonet) Technical Network. Not just Fidonet, but any network
FV> that uses the Fidonet technology to transport mail/files and such.
FV> It's more generic and covers more area. :)

Awwww. My mind is going on me. You would have thought I would know that
acronym since I am a member of Fidonet... :-((

GM>>>> your problems. Is your e-mail server running in a Demilitarized
 GM>>>> Zone?
FV>> My system runs Win98 with Windows' Internet Connection Sharing

GM>> That should cover the software aspect... Hardware router?
FV> No hardware router. ICS handles the routing and firewall. It's not
FV> really configurable on the routing end.

FV> What you have to understand about my network is: It is all run on
FV> Windows 98. It is all BNC cable. There is no hardware router. The main
FV> BBS syste handles the DSL, BBS/FTN and the ICS stuff. That computer is
FV> a P200 MMX with a bit over 128 meg of memory. There are 5 computers
FV> connected to the LAN. I've been told by "professionals" that I can't
 FV> do what I'm doing. :)

Your P200 MMX / 128MB system sounds exactly like my dedicated DOS/Wfw311
Fidonet mailer system. The only difference is that I don't trust W98 to
'munge' up my 16-bit DOS box with long file names. And, I only use Wfw311
to copy my DOS files to either of the XPP / W98 boxes so I can burn some
rewritable CD-ROM backup disks -- all CAT5. You should hear some of the
flak I get for my use of Windows for Workgroup v3.11.... :-))

FV> I do have a HW router and the stuff to convert to CAT5, but I'm
FV> waiting until I rearrange the house and put the computers in a room of
 FV> their own. :)

Get one of the kids some luggage for their birthday and you will soon have
a room for the computers. <vBg>

FV>> All ports that are not used for the BBS are blocked.
 GM>> There is a file that can be used to turn off unnecessary ports;
 GM>> what is the name?
FV> ICS config (icscfg.exe) is the program. One can also create .INF files
 FV> and install them.

I Googled for ICSCFG and it appears that there _WAS_ a ICSCFG14.EXE
available for Internet Connection Sharing with a dialup modem for Windows
98, but I found most of the links to the download to be broken.

Since I'm running all three computers via cable hookup, they are all online
all the time and it's unlikely I require ICS. I was thinking there was
something available to test which ports are open and close the unnecessary
ones....

           Cheers ... Gerald
