Ärende: Fighting Spam
=====================
Hello Frank,

Responding to a post in the INTERNET area:
    On Saturday February 05 2005 at 09:59,
Frank Vest [1:124/6308.1] wrote to Gerald Miller,

 FV>>>> Me neither. :)
 GM>>>> I'm getting old. What's your excuse? <g>
 FV>> Same. :)
GM>> Too soon we get old, too late we get smart. ;-))

 FV> Therory:
FV> We gain most of our intelegence from birth until puberty. At puberty,
FV> we are almost all knowing. The problem is that there is a block which
FV> prevents us from using the knowledge and gaining more knowledge. It is
FV> called a harmone. In the male, this is testosterone.

If you're a teenager...

FV> As we age, the level of this harmone drops and we regain the ability
FV> to use the knowledge we gained from birth until puberty. Also, we
FV> regain some ability to learn and increase our knowledge. This make us

FV> Now, since every person's harmone level drops at different rates
FV> durring their life, it is easy to see why some people appear to be,
FV> and in some cases are, smarter than others.

That could explain why on some days, I am a Dumba##, while on other days, I
am a Smarta##. My hormone levels rage and wane... ;-)

FV> The conclusing to this (and I hope I don't get moderated) is that men
FV> who are smart have no balls. :-))

Wouldn't that make them women?

FV> <Note: This is an original therory. I dreamed it up and wrote it on my
FV> own on the fly just now.>

Theory? I thought it was LAW!

 FV>
 FV> :-))

FV> I suppose the spam would have to be illegal in some way.. IE: A con,
FV> or attempt to get passwords or such. I seems that just advertising is
FV> not considered that much of a crime. <shrug>

My fave is the "Nigerian scam"; 'you have inherited countless millions, but
we require tenty thousand dollars for processing.'

Then, there are the attempts at identity theft; 'your bank account has been
compromised. We require your bank account number, pin number and password.'

Attempts at identity theft is a criminal offense, whether you have an
account at that particular bank or not. (I love to answer these e-mails by
providing them with fictitious information.... :-))))

FV>> This new IP addressing sounds great. I jiust wonder how it's going to
FV>> integrate with older stuff (software).
GM>> Apparently, it is _supposed_ to be backward compatible with the
GM>> current IPv4 addressing. I did a "ipv6 install" on my Win XPP box
GM>> and forgot to uninstall after I was through 'playing' with it --
GM>> didn't appear to adversely affect the operation of XP; still got my
GM>> e-mail, surfed the web, etc. I finally caught my 'mistake' and
 GM>> uninstalled it because
FV> My concern was with my (continued) use of Win98 for my BBS. I really
FV> don't want to upgrade in a forced manner.

I just started running Windows 2000 Pro and I trust you saw my message
regarding the IPv6 research package put out by Micro$oft. I have installed
the package, but have not had the time to run it. I still have to find out
if you require a 'special' router or if the existing router is compatible.
Can anyone help me out with that?

FV>> Fido (Fidonet) Technical Network. Not just Fidonet, but any network
FV>> that uses the Fidonet technology to transport mail/files and such.
FV>> It's more generic and covers more area. :)
GM>> Awwww. My mind is going on me. You would have thought I would know
GM>> that acronym since I am a member of Fidonet... :-((
FV> Many don't catch that. Just as the initials (I think I coined it
FV> originally) FSP=Fidonet Service Provider go over heads. To me, it
FV> means a Sysop that has a Fidonet Node number and provides the Fidonet
FV> message service to the community or to users via a BBS, QWK or Point.

Well, I've only had a Fidonet Node for about six years (I'm a novice) and
my Node is Mail-Only -- I don't provide service to any downlinks; it's for
my own personal pleasure and enjoyment.

GM>> Your P200 MMX / 128MB system sounds exactly like my dedicated
GM>> DOS/Wfw311 Fidonet mailer system. The only difference is that I
GM>> don't trust W98 to 'munge' up my 16-bit DOS box with long file names.
GM>> And, I only use Wfw311 to copy my DOS files to either of the XPP /
GM>> W98 boxes so I can burn some rewritable CD-ROM backup disks -- all
GM>> CAT5. You should hear some of the flak I get for my use of Windows
 GM>> for Workgroup v3.11.... :-))
FV> If it works, use it! I have a p133 that runs the dial-up line via
FV> Taurus mailer and the "dialuptotelnet" program. It's not a real
FV> powerhouse system, but for one dial-up line and a DNS updater, it does
 FV> fine.

FV> I had a Dos system online for a while that used Dos 6.20, Desqview and
FV> the WFWG Add-on. It was networked with the rest of the Lan and had few
 FV> problems.

I don't know of any software / system that is not without problems.

FV>> I do have a HW router and the stuff to convert to CAT5, but I'm
FV>> waiting until I rearrange the house and put the computers in a room
 FV>> of their own. :)
GM>> Get one of the kids some luggage for their birthday and you will soon
GM>> have a room for the computers. <vBg>
FV> One is moving. It's just slow. :)

Moving at the speed of life? <g>

GM>> Since I'm running all three computers via cable hookup, they are all
GM>> online all the time and it's unlikely I require ICS. I was thinking
GM>> there was something available to test which ports are open and close
 GM>> the unnecessary ones....
FV> There are a lot of way to locate open ports. There is one program
FV> called Port Detective that I have used. There's also the
FV> http://grc.com site (Shields Up) and the DSL Reports site just to name
FV> two. These will scan your system for open ports and other possible
FV> security problems. Shields Up site is free. The other is limited.

FV> Also, the Trend Micro site offers a free online virus scan.
 FV> "trendmicro.com".

Ah, yes. I think I had a few problems when those sites couldn't do a thing
for me because I wasn't using Internet Exploder. Mozilla and Mozilla
Firefox are my browsers of choice on the XPP and W2K boxes, respectively.

           Cheers ... Gerald
