Hello Maurice.

14 Feb 09 16:13, you wrote to me:

Well, if it had those abilities, the others, could have been "fixed" :-)
Tho I doudt the end result would have been as good as Linux/FreeBSD ... <VVBG>
But it would have made it a useable OS, if not a good one ...

My eyes are also showing their age, currently have the problem that while
sitting at my "computer table" I am too close too the monitor for my eyes with
glasses on, and it I take then off, I have a very limited time period, during
which my eyes can read the screen, before they start bluring, and the monitor
is already pushed hard up against the wall ... :-((

Am on the look out for a decent LCD monitor ... , as I'll be able to push that
far enough back, and then some to accomodate my eyes/glasses

 >> get the Kinal patented "heave ho" function

MK> Amen! No computer should be without it. That and a working delete
MK> key is all anyone really needs. <BFEG>

:-))

Right'o ... <grin>

 >> otherwise, flac, encoding is used ...

MK> Right. I am planning to experiment with both flac and libsndfile in
MK> the very near future. One step at a time. I already have a
MK> hotswappable sata drive I plan to use for this idea. Definetly will
 MK> need the space.

Hard drives have been dying way to reqularly here recently ... , tho most have
been old 6gig and 20gig HDD,s, but there demise has seriously limited my
experimentaly ability here ... :-((

 >> A very capable library that is ... , does not do mp3 tho,
 >> tho there is lame for that ...

MK> Right. However will have to keep the sample rate to 48kHz max and/or
MK> resample the original down to a lower sample rate. Piping the output
MK> to lame will solve that and keep the storage space as minimalized as
MK> one could expect if high quality uncompressed originals are the goal,
MK> which I think it is.

LAME will keep storage space minimalized, but loose quality ... , FLAC will
save some disc space, and the original source ... , if the flac encoder is
coded properly, one should be able to encode a *.wav file, and then decode it,
and compare it to the original *.wav file, and not find any differences ...

 >> libsndfile can handle 8/16/24 bit PCM encoded FLAC files ... , or
 >> so the webpage says ... :-)

MK> I read that too. Also libsndfile can handle 32-bit ones as well. This
MK> could be significant in the right situation.

 >> Must get to play with it and ecasound sometime

MK> For sure!!! Don't forget about hotswapping a sata drive. That also
MK> will assist greatly in this particular endevour. The Sil3114 based
MK> one you mentioned will work fine depite the lack of the port
 MK> multiplier compatibility.

No, not forgetting the hotswapping of sata drives, I need to buy some drives
sometime, and an external case or two, but a new computer is in the plans for
next month, will see how that works out ...

Think it is time I buy myself something for a change ...

 >> Yeah, well, that has more outputs/inputs than I can usefully use

MK> Same here but what the heck. You just never know for sure. Mind you
MK> I could say the same about the Audiofile 192. Same thing with the
 MK> Revolution 7.1.

The Audiofile 192 only has 2 balanced input/outputs and 2 normal input/outputs
and does stereo only ...

 >> I consider it mission critical, as music listening at a quality
 >> level higher than most appreciate, is one of my major "hobbies"

MK> Amen again! I couldn't agree with you more on this.

<VBHG> YEP!!
