Right.  Those are of absolutely no consequence given the need for optical
drives.  I've effectively eliminated the need.  This idea will work with
regular drives as well as ones wired into a usb port, up to and including the
elcheapo usb flashdisk, pen drives, or whatever the kids these days call them. 
No need for any special formatting.  What this effectively does is to liberate
the disk for other uses, such as packages ready to be installed and/or a backup
for restoration purposes, and/or additional space to create a backup from an
existing system.  No iso tools required, nevermind wanted.  This is the good
stuff.

Never heard of it.  What filesystems can it handle?

Heh, heh.  Yeah that can and does happen in Linux too.  For that I use chroot
and reset passwords on an already existing system.  Works like a charm.

I've seen the local guru doing that.  Mostly laptops these days. What a pain
that is.  Thank goodness it isn't needed on any system here, although
occasionaly I've had to revert back to a working system from an experimental
one but not exactly for the above mentioned reason. There is little here that
malware is interested in or could do anything with even if malware were
interested in.  Keep it simple.

I think I got it cased or at least I have it successfully booting to everything
other that optical drives.  Those things are a total waste of electricity
methinks.

I'll post a new package list once I have tested a few more things. I want to
make sure that busybox's tar and friends are in sync with the usual suspects. 
That is definetly critical.  If not then the usual suspects will have to be
part and parcel of the scheme.
