That is more or less how it started here.  I did have one pci card that could
hotswap ide's but that only worked with a buggy chipset that is no longer
manufactured in conjunction with some modprobe jiggery-pokery at the time. 
Given what has happened since, then usb is the better and cheaper solution
generically speaking.

Overkill but what the heck eh?  Lately I've discovered that ~8G for something
like this is the optimal answer and that includes storage space, building
space, as well as more than enough space for the boot/root which effectively
offers much elbow room and future upgrading.

Now you're talking!!!  You'll also want mga_vid especially for your demo idea.

It might if a compressed 128M ramdisk is employed.  I haven't checked yet as I
haven't been compressing them as of late.  I find that I've been too
experimental lately and leaving them uncompressed saves me a bunch of grief. 
Also I have no idea if the samba client crap actually works. Unless you tell me
chances are good I will never know the answer.

Understood.  Once there I am sure anything further can be readily added.

I have a usb one that size and have never used the whole shebang ... yet. I
created two partitions on there, 64M and the rest, and use the 64M partition
for boot kernels and ramdisk(s).  I was thinking about using the second partion
for installation and upgrade packages but have yet to do that.  A 2Gig cfdisk
will definetly suit your demo idea and then some. it'll have something onboard
to show off if no networking is available. On an ide interface bandwidth won't
be an issue.
