Ärende: we've only just begun
=============================
> not me... i never mentioned cd changers ;)

MK> It was implied in the juke box idea that you brought up.

not in my mind it wasn't... but then again, i've never had or used a cd changer
device with rotating tray or whatever... everything i've ever used was multiple
readers in one form or another...

> you can't do multiple accesses to the same CD or data on a CD

MK> It would require multiple optical drives to accomplish.

and multiple copies of the same disk if you're trying to cater to reading the
same data multiple times from different remotes... not feasible... been there
and done that...

> i'm still trying to figure sending the audio over the network
> to a remote station... why not just stream the file over and
> let the remote station use its decoders and audio system to
> play it...

MK> Excellent idea. That is almost exactly what I said in the first
MK> place. For my part I was only interested in the client side of
MK> things and what it would require. Everyone else complicated this
MK> whole idea with samba and other unneeded sillinesss.

well... using some network accessed filesystem allows the clients to do all the
work themselves... otherwise, you have to set up like a "radio station" where
the station operator creates and maintains the playlists... with the client in
full control, the client's user(s) create and maintain their playlists...
depending on one's circumstances, the "radio station" idea may not be what is
needed and may also be hampered by copyright and licensing legalities and
fees...

MK> I just further added fuel to the fire by throwing in 276 CD-ROMs
MK> just for fun. I don't even have one anymore and am not really
MK> interested in them at all.

well, just think of a real life radio station and what they do these days... in
the past they cued up individual albums or singles on two turntables... these
days, all of that has been replaced by computers and the huge majority of
broadcast music is simply playlists that even have the commercials listed in
them so there's almost no manual intervention necessary...

MK> Mind you a decent sound card would be nice.

on which end and in which of the 3 discussed scenarios? ;)

MK> Also that multiple port pci ethernet card you brought up would be
MK> nice to know where to get at the proce you quoted. I looked up
MK> where a decent 4 port one could be had and it looks like it is
MK> doable at ~600 Canadian. Where you are finding them at less than
MK> that is intriguing to me.

one can find quad port NICs in the near $150US or less range by doing some
serious looking around... i just found a dlink quad port DFE-570TX for
$165US... dual port PCI nics (intel IIRC) can be found in the $30US range and
with that in mind, double that for quad ports should also be doable... we're
not talking about new tech, here... the ones that i have seen have chips with
dates of 1996 and 1997 on them...

i know i've seen folk talking about Sun and sparc cards that worked a treat for
them in their old PIII >1Ghz boxes they were building for their smoothwall
express install... at least one guy used an old Replay case and modded it to
hold his Atom board with sparc quad-port nic for his rack mount setup...

and i just found an old (back in april 2009) forum post about the Sun quad-port
nics being found on ebay for $15US... i also found another post that's a bit
older (Feb 2009) of similar also on ebay... some of these cards may be 64bit
cards instead of 32bit cards... some may also prefer to be placed in pci-x or
pci-e slots than standard pci slots... but it all depends on your needs,
hardware and the software/OS you are running...
