Ärende: do you remember when
============================
Hey Mark!

> yes, actually... you are... and i'm not confusing you with
> another else because you are the only one i'm writing to
> (for the most part) in this thread ;)

Understood. However the only time file sharing was brought up was in context
to a multimedia player that could handle samba shares. My response to that need
was it would put the whole shebang well over the initial 64M flash disk
limitation and had said at the time it was highly unlikely to be really a need,
especially around this part of the world due to a complete lack of reachable
samba servers. I've heard rumours of a few locals who have samba but none of
those can be confirmed since they are unreachable. If there are indeed any
than they are running on LANs or possibly wireless that are out of reach from
here.

Fro the record I only have ftpd and sshd running on anything that is reachable.
I noticed the other day that someone in your part of the world (Virginia)
figured out how to view some pictures one of my neighbours has backed up there
using a mozilla based browser. I found that interesting given I don't
advertise. You have at least one smart local. ;-)

> we're not talking about solely at _your_ place... we're talking
> about in general all over the world...

Ah! Are you aware of anyone anywhere who is offering that service and is
reachable with a multimedia player?

> and we don't hot swap anything at all over here

Your decision. Personally I find it quite useful and occasionally at least two
neighbours have taken advantage of it. They were mostly impressed with an
esata thingy that resembles a toaster and takes both 2.5" and 3.5" sata drives.
The last couple of usuages for both was to install Slackware64-13.0 directly
onto without any need for booting it up. I just used my running system to
accomadate the installs. Super fast and they were bootable as per the
specifications to their targetted systems. Absolutely no DVDs were harmed in
the process.

> you'll duplicate that music file to both workstation's HDs??

Nope. I am not much into music files but did test out the idea a few times
over the years just to see if it can be done. Like I said in a previous post
to you, I am happy with the old fashioned method with a turntable and records I
happen to have dragged around over the many, many, many years. I never did buy
into CDs although I do happen to have about a half dozen of.

> filesharing stuff for

Right. Except it was someone else who brought it up. I was never personally
interested in the idea, especially not samba but also said at the time I don't
even use nfs although having used it off and on in the past. ftp is fine with
me.

> access it via the network without copying or duplicating it on
> to the local HD (for all intents and purposes)...

That works with ftp(d). On the client end I just use wget and pipe that to a
player. Works fine. Also mplayer can achieve the exact same result without
wget. I fail to see the need for samba.

> i don't see how it has really degenerated all that much

Samba is where the idea came unravelled. The target was a 64M compact flash
disk.

> to clarify them and point out their plusses and minusses...

Understood. See above. I had the whole shebang, with the potential for
creating digital multimedia files, and a very good 64 bit kernel geared to this
idea, all in under 64M. Samba is the straw that broke it's back.

> color LCD screen from a cell phone?? :P

That is way too small! My eyes need a tad more real estate. I've seen a few
DVD automobile players that are within my comfort zone. Now if I could find
one of them without the rest - just the display - then that would be closer to
what I want. I know they exist but haven't run across anyone selling them yet.
The industrial suppliers have them but those are REALLY pricey.

> definitely not... you generate the most traffic in here

Someone has to.

Too bad I am so hardcore and anal when it comes to linux eh?

Look ma!!! No stinkin' GUI!

Life is good,
Maurice
