> no... you're missing the storage space situation

MK> No I am not. I think you've got me confused with someone else.

yes, actually... you are... and i'm not confusing you with another else because
you are the only one i'm writing to (for the most part) in this thread ;)

MK> There is no need for file sharing here. Never was, probably never
 MK> will be.

we're not talking about solely at _your_ place... we're talking about in
general all over the world...

MK> None of the hotswapped drives are network drives and the
MK> only reason I hotswap at all is to create new bootable drives for
MK> differing targets, sometimes my own, sometimes for others.

and we don't hot swap anything at all over here... we have no need for it but
you don't see me directing others away from it or deriding the problems that it
carries... if someone needs hot swapping or file sharing, great! i'll assist if
i can same as you :)

> workstation needing access to the same file(s), why duplicate
> them on each station??

MK> The only duplicates I call backups. At the moment, as we speak,
MK> there are only two so-called workstations here

so, if those two workstations are in different parts of your location and you
want to listen to the same song on both of them at the same time (maybe you're
walking back and forth between them or maybe you have guests over listening to
one while you check something out on the other) you'll duplicate that music
file to both workstation's HDs?? that's what we're talking about the
filesharing stuff for... you'd have only ONE copy of the file on a central
machine and the workstation(s) would access it via the network without copying
or duplicating it on to the local HD (for all intents and purposes)...

MK> and one is more of a server than a workstation. That is currently
MK> the Atom which is my experimental pure 12VDC sucker at the
MK> moment. If the power goes down it will become more of a
MK> workstation once I work out the display issue.

ok but not really here or there with regard the topic of sharinf music files
over a network...

> no way to easily share it with all of them??

MK> ftp and/or ssh. That is currently how they share anything needing
MK> sharing which is usually install/upgrade packages and build scripts

that's not sharing... that's closer to store and forward or some such ;)

MK> I am working on. I like to ensure that either one can replicate
MK> what the other can do should it matter. Again that is more like
MK> backups than file sharing. I've never had much need for file
 MK> sharing.

obviously!

MK> You mean like a network phone or possibly digital voice messaging?

> could evesdrop on the sounds from the remote workstation

MK> Ah! Yeah that is different than what I was thinking about.

i figured as much... this came up some years back when it was discovered and
was, at that time, a huge security concern... it still is a security concern
today but i don't know if it is as easily done as back then...

> what i'm trying to point out is that there's more than one way
> to share sound data over a network

MK> Understood. Originally I was talking about a simple media player.

right :)

MK> This topic degenerated from there.

i don't see how it has really degenerated all that much... more like what
happened is the original poster needed additional capabilities in addition to
just a simple media player...

MK> I only said it was possible to add samba - client only - if some
MK> other machine was accessable and actually had AV media to share.

right... and there was also some talk about streaming the data like a radio
station instead of using samba or NFS or some other file sharing method... i
got into the discussion because it was getting confusing that there were
actually two different methods being bandied about and so i endeavored to try
to clarify them and point out their plusses and minusses...

MK> Personally I wouldn't bother but someone else thought it would be
MK> a need. Around this neck of the woods there is no such critter
MK> unless I made it happen, which is HIGHLY unlikey.

that particular person does need the additional capabilities... just because
you don't shouldn't lead to denigrating their use as you tend to do so many
times :?

> replace it with your favorite DC supply and enjoy! :)

MK> Done. Now I need a 12VDC monitor. Got one you care to share? ;-)

color LCD screen from a cell phone?? :P

> one of us seems to have some sort of tunnel vision

MK> I think both. Also I think you have me confused with someone else.

definitely not... you generate the most traffic in here
