Ärende: and the band played on
==============================
Hey James!

JB> Too many are streaming porn over your paid-for bandwidth

That too. Last time I talked with one of the shaw guru's he was
'blaming' netflicks. Myself I am still ignoring utube and have yet to
evolve to ignoring netflicks. On a simular 'waste of bandwidth' note, I
heard on the so-called business news that facebook usuage is down
Canada wide. Isn't a world wide trend but we can always hope but then
that would give me one less thing to ignore. Not sure what would
replace facebook that would be worthy of ignoring.

JB> Now, if I could just avoid chatting up the webcam girls

Right. I forgot about webcams and chat. I should probably get one
working so I can legitimately file it in the ignoring category.
Speaking of which last time I checked the uvc based cams seemed to be
working well.

JB> One mouse click *is* easier to remember for an idjiat like me, than
JB> a long convoluted CL or five.

What is this 'mouse click' function you refer to above? It does not
compute. ;-)

JB> I just say that Telnet *is* supported through the port.

For sure. Has been since the earth's crust first cooled. Where have
you been since then? Keep up with the past buddy!!! :::evil grin:::

JB> Sparks just increase your fun or amplify your stupidity.

Oh yeah. Had quite of few sparks flying around here lately over the
Atom upgrade. Seems to have worked as the Google bot successfully
touched base earlier this morning with it so I am satisfied that I have
done my part for the so-called high speed cause. Still waiting for a
smart phone to rear it's ugly head within range of the wireless on there
but am confident that it can and does actually work. However the wpa2
stuff is still unproven wrt smart phones but it does work with standard
PC based wireless schtuff. If one doesn't show up soon I'll probably do
a backup of it and move onto something more fun like mesh networking in
the meantime. I need to justify this wireless stuff to myself and so
far it hasn't been all that much fun.

JB> I was going to mention a driver issue

You would have been bang on. Had this same issue before but with the
10/100 realtek version and it got fixed somewhere in the 2.6.27-ish
range. Disabling the 8169 driver and replacing it with realtek's 8168
driver nailed it on a 2.6.38.8 kernel. The Google bot is now happy so I
am not complaining ... much. I plan to leave well enough alone for now.

JB> Some grumblings I recall that lilo will NOT support 64-bit.

------------------- ye ol' gpm cut n' paste starts
# ldd /sbin/lilo
        linux-vdso.so.1 =>  (0x00007fff697ff000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x00007fd8c2dbf000)
        /lib/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x00007fd8c3166000)

# file /sbin/lilo
/sbin/lilo: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV),
dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.24, stripped
------------------- ye ol' gpm cut n' paste ends

Seems to be 64 bit. Also works fine with the larger 2048 byte mbr's
that are all the rage recently. Doesn't work with efi boots though.

JB> There are two CPUs in those servers, but they ARE both 32-bit
 JB> coded vintages.

They should be just fine but I seriously doubt those machines can even
boot off usb no matter what is attached to them via that interface, efi
capable or not. Maybe but I have doubts. What vintage are we talking?

JB> HOORAY! More parts for Chirnside and me!

Do you mean like the wireless pci card working in ap mode on the
Atom as we speak? Got that one for a song due to it didn't work on a
Windows box the one time it was tried. Absolutely nothing wrong with
it from what I see here.

Life is good,
Maurice
