=================================
Hi! Ed,

On Sun, 03 Jun 12, you wrote to me:

EV> I've been using DoPDF a lot since You told me about it.
EV> I set it to make Small files of things I want to keep.

That might have been Tom Walker who told you about it. I've never used it, as
I've had the linux VM providing the facility for all machines for over eight
years now.

 EV> I know that I won't ever become a paperless user.

Like all things in computing, it just takes practice & perseverence. You'll
get there. :)

I just did a stats query with my Windows TC on my main PDF library. There's
925 files across 29 directories, totalling 440megs. I know that there's a lot
of overhead with the PDF format but they usually have a _lot_ of graphics
included in them besides the text. One fine example is a capture of a recent
entry on the 'Badass of the Week' website, of Captain Kim Campbell's exemplary
flying skills over Baghdad back in April 2003 (I still have a PDF copy of her
story from an aviation-specialised website, from a couple of years back).

EV> IIRC, Wood Chips, Rags and "Used Newspaper" were placed in a acid
EV> bath, and later the 'slush' was made into new newspaper.

The mention of 'rags' is different but that may have been cotton rags to
provide the 'fibre' perhaps.[shrug]

EV> So as a little kid I knew paper had always had 'OLD' paper in it.
 EV> Twasn't nuttin new to me. ;-)

Agreed.

EV> OK thanks, I'll look at ZIP and UNZIP in U'u 7.04 in the Terminal to
EV> see if similar option letters are used as Phil Katz Zip uses.
EV> Does U'u have a GUI Extract program as Windows XP does?

Ah, yes. Some distributions include an 'archive manager' doo-hickey. It's
similar to a particular Windows utility, the name of which eludes me at this
time... hang on, I'll check Google... yikes! I didn't get far... it's called
WinZip. No matter what they're called, their method of operation brings tears
to my eyes; they're a PITA to use.

EV> I forgot about that Paul, thanks for reminding me. I have used Free
EV> Commander a bit a couple months ago. TC is still on my desktop but I
EV> don't think I've used it enought for it to start giving me NAG
 EV> SCREENS.

That's my other favourite TC. Far better than the Tux version. I've
registered it though I had been using it for over a decade beforehand. I miss
not having to hit the button to continue. :)

EV> I haven't been on UseNet but in my old days I started out with a 300
EV> baud modem that connected to the telephone handset cord.

An internal modem? I used to swear by them until I got sick of pulling
machines apart just to move the modem from PC to PC. My first one was a gift
from a sysop back in the early 90s, an old 300/1200 baud (thought 1200 was very
unreliable).

EV> I was just one step away from using a Audio coupled modem then.

I've seen one of them thar things! :) Back in the early 80s, I used to play
boardgames at a house where an on-line business used to operate from, which
took orders over the accoustic coupler attached to an early BBS. The house had
a polished wooden floor so we had to tippy-toe around in socks, so as to not
annoy the modem. Have you ever tried to tip-toe in socks over a polished
floor? It ain't easy (for a big bloke). :)

 EV> Saturday I made a new vBox for U'u 7.04, 512MB RAM, 8GB FIXED HD

Oooh... more adventures...

Cheers,
Paul.
