Ärende: U'u GUI stuff
=====================
Hi! Ed,

Sorry about the delay. I wanted to make some time available for this.
Although I have a lot of time these days I seem to find lots of ways to fill it
in with. Here's the result of 20-30 minutes worth...

On Sat, 07 Jul 12, you wrote to me:

 EV> 1. MOUNT a drive

Most times the drive will auto-mount. When in strife I've had to resort to
using a U'u-supplied doover on the system menu, like this...

[Menu]-->System-->Administration-->Disk Utility

That will tell what hardware U'u can see, and offers multiple options to help
you.

 EV> 2. PRINT a directory listing to a Printer (which is something I
 EV> haven't learned how to do in XP unless I'm at a CMD command prompt and
 EV> redirect the output to a file to print later on.)

I looked everywhichway with the U'u-supplied explorer thing called Nautilus but
couldn't find anything likely (remember I'm still using U'u 10.04 LTS). All it
wanted to do was the usual 'file operations' and nothing like printing (it's
not even a menu option).

The closest I came up with was in TuxCommander...

[TuxC]-->Select group of files-->[Menu]-->Commands-->Copy file names to
clipboard-->[Etc.]

Close but it only grabs the _file_names_ without the details. There is another
option to 'copy the full pathname' but it is equally useless WRT what you want.
 Getting the clipboard contents is simple in an editor, for later printing.

(Keep in mind that TuxC is a *free* download from the U'u Software Centre [on
the U'u system menu]. Like most things in the U'u universe, TuxC is itself
*free* in any case. NOTE: If you do want to look at it then make sure you
choose the addons mentioned down the page in the Software Centre info dialogue
for TuxC.)

The only really close solution is to do a screenshot using the system menu
option...

[Menu]-->Applications-->Take Screenshot

Of course that will only grab what's available in a window and not an entire
directory's worth of file details, which might be longer than a screen window.

In the end, you may have to resort to using the terminal command-line for the
ultimate result (do a "ls" and re-direct it to a file (same as in DOS with ">"
but you knew that), and print it later.

 EV> 3. Compare two files (CMP)

Nope. That's got me stumped. I'd do a visual comparison using Eyeball V1.00
with TuxC, since it's a typical Commander thingy with left & right file panels.
 It's possible to view (like LIST) two or more text-like files side-by-side at
the same time but that gets tiring.

If I was wanting to get serious with the operation then I'd copy the files to
somewhere that I could unleash my Windows Total Commander at them, as it has
some nice comparison functions (directory compare or a complete directory
_tree_ compare). As a last resort for a text file compare I would use good ol'
FC at a DOS prompt. =:)

 EV> 4. See the contents in a file (CAT), sorta like I use LIST.COM to look
 EV> around the innards of a (EXE, COM, TXT, HTM, etc., etc.) file

Well, the standard U'u Nautilus explorer can invoke applications to look at
file contents based on their (mime?) types but since I prefer TuxC 99% of the
time I don't care.  :)  Oops.

TuxC's viewer is like a List.Com window anyway, although it doesn't have the
options available in the old DOS tool. IAC it's not as nice as my Windows TC,
which has similar & more options as/than LIST.

 EV> Thats enuf for now, but don't rattle your brain too much where you
 EV> can't get the other things done that needs to be done. Thanks!

Gee. My ears are ringing. It must be time for coffee.

 EV> I've not looked at U'u's Help yet but I'm sure I'd find it in there.

I don't usually. I've managed to acquire some good .PDF references that
usually get me re-started. Failing that, then the U'u support forums is the
next stop.

 EV> I haven't been able to access Mikes CCO BBS all this week until this
 EV> afternoon.

Stuff happens... here and other places. Them's the breaks, big & small.

 EV> Did Ya miss me?

Like a toothache?  :)

Cheers,
Paul.
