Hey Chip!

Understood. However I am sticking to my claim that the average Windows user
isn't worth worrying about as far as getting them to switch over to Linux. I
doubt very much it would improve the situation wrt hardware or software issues,
if indeed there are any real issues. Most of the problems in Linux are due to
inferior hardware/software and given that Windows users want that stuff then it
only makes sense to me that they stick with Windows and hopefully the rest o us
won't succumb to that trap.

MK>> Not one bit of MS software to be seen.

CH> Yeap, and they had a budget in the 6 and 7 digits. :)

For the hardware, yes. Then there's the salaries, maintenance, support, etc.
Definetly not for the weak of mind or heart. Awesome stuff and results for
sure. I recall Cray's demo of a digital cruise missle in flight that
supposedly took 24 hours of cpu time for two minutes of "film". Not too
shabby. Only 600,000 USD for that baby back in 92-ish.

For sure. I've always had problems in the past with Debian and upgrades.
Everytime I upgraded the kernel it broke utilities and it was a real pain to
bring everything up to speed again. I find that far less so with Slackware if
I stick close to the basics. X is a whole other can of worms no matter which
distriibution.

Right. Bankers aren't very adventerous to say the least. Probably a good
thing though.

CH> Limiting oneself to Linux only, and you live in an

I suppose. Not an issue with me though despite being surrounded by Windows
people. I don't do Windows. Never have, never will. It isn't worth the
hassel.

CH> Lets look at your point above... compilers... Do you use the same
CH> version of compiler that you used when you first started?

Nope. However all it cost me to upgrade was my time and effort. Same with
everything else. Heck I'd even help others except nobody else is interested
unless I do it all for them and then they just complain. That is why I don't
sweat it.

CH> They <my clients> have one very Green object. And that is what
 CH> everyone
 CH> is looking for. :)

I suppose.

I used to do that. I don't care much for laptops though. Some of the older
ones with tft's and C&T 65550 graphic chips and higher can be fun.

Life is good,
Maurice
