Ärende: lockfile nee-Router/Fire
================================
01-20-05 07:50, Maurice Kinal told James Bradley about Router/Firewall Advice

 Well, how do, Maurice?

JB> Been here since '68. Close to a million idiot... er people here now!
 MK> Yeah. Boon still on?

Daniel Boon is dead! <G> The boom here, is still going as far as I know. We've
had more head offices move here than Toronto has left if one is to believe the
reports.
 JB> Oh... I don't? <G> I'm still alive, so I'm doin' something right.
MK> Or just plain ol' lucky like the rest of us.

Ya... Lucky I saw the idiots before they crashed into me. <-;
JB> should be more info here soon.
MK> What do you need in the meantime?

Where to start? How about the modem's lock file.

ttyS0 links to /dev/tts/0, but the lock file is only usable by su or root.
(Admin might be able to use it, but I haven't tried yet.) minicom executes for
regular accounts, but the lockfile is still out of reach. The two regular
accounts belong to a modem group, and minicom is dialed in to allow all users.
However, minicom is still using /dev/ttyS0 in it's configuration.

How about a parallel port NIC? I'm trying to cram a PE-EPPct Ethernet Pocket
LAN Adapter into the mix. The usual "compatible" drivers with the resources of
the port don't seem to acknowledge it. The MS documentation mentioned spoofing
the address to something other than 378 - Nada.

hidusb drivers for nut... Should I go on? <G>

I think I'll pull out the old distro just to read some HOWTO's. I'll just have
to pay attention to where bash may have changed in the interim, as you
mentioned.
JB> As in a 'puter to NTSC/PAL? Mine does that, but it does it with a
JB> dongle. You were talking about strapping a tuners output into the MB,
 JB> maybe?

MK> Right. I have a pci one at the moment but was thinking
MK> about a usb one I borrowed to the neighbour. The pci one
MK> works really good on the smp but I haven't done much with
MK> it other then to watch TV. Got it working on the console
MK> with framebuffer graphics. Look ma! No GUI!!! :-)

<LOL> One local went to Linux to get his capture/tuner card to work at all!
Even with all the resources available, they can be tricky bits to work on
Windows. I don't know if there's memory addresses some vid cards like to use
that conflict, or what... Plug-n-Pray indeed!
MK> Not yet. I don't have a TV. What for? I hardly watch TV
MK> other then news and the Simpsons. What else is there?

Don't get me started. Because I have reduced mobility, I tend to scour the
waves for something to watch. Nice watching about some of the science out there
these days.
MK> when I get a better handle on smp or get the usb working on
MK> the new C3 jobber. Just for fun.

That's what it is? Fun... Oh ya... This is fun! <G>
JB> The MB here will work with a (I'd have to check to be sure.) 800 or
JB> 900 MHz VIA, but a Medoceeno (Ta HECK if I can remember those code
JB> names.) of only 7(something) hundred M would work. Nothing to do with
JB> the speed of the machine with a given MHz CPU, but what the MB would
 JB> accept.

MK> Often is is simply the fsb and the multiplier, but sometimes the
MK> voltage can play a factor. You might be able to underclock a faster
MK> cpu then the board supposedly can handle. We did that with
 MK> socket 7 boards and k6-2's.

Exactly - the fsb. The MB will run 100MHz with one, or 133M on another. All the
multiplying, and clock settings are done logically. But about the underclocking
of the K-6... I was told a 500MHz CPU wouldn't run at all in a fsb of 83M. The
guy that didn't want to sell me one said an internal CPU doubler wouldn't allow
the system to boot at all. I couldn't reason why I wouldn't be able to run the
MB at 50MHz.

... James
