Without knowing what way Knoppix doesn't like your sound chip it's
difficult for us to know whether it's software or hardware related.
Here is the basic steps you can take regarding any hardware problems.

First use the tools at hand. When you are using Windows identify
the sound card using the device manager. Jot the down name of the
card/chip then interrupt it is using and the port hex range.
I know what you are going to say "Oh so i have to use Windows to
fix a Linux problem". :-} Actually you don't but since you are new
to Linux you use the tools at hand.

Next time you boot Knoppix, open up a terminal session and at the
command prompt type.

cat /proc/interrupts

What you should see is something like below exept the asterisk is mine.

           CPU0
  0: 1976414 XT-PIC timer
  1: 4543 XT-PIC i8042
  2: 0 XT-PIC cascade
  8: 1 XT-PIC rtc
  9: 11865 XT-PIC es1370 *
 10: 0 XT-PIC uhci_hcd
 11: 32 XT-PIC eth0
 12: 2432 XT-PIC i8042
 14: 8287 XT-PIC ide0
 15: 17136 XT-PIC ide1
NMI: 0
LOC: 1976418
ERR: 0
MIS: 0

The line infront of the asterisk is the sound card module. The first
number is the interrupt it is using the second tells me it is active
and the es1370 is the module the sound card is using. The module
usually resembles the manufactures name. In this case it is an Esonic
sound chip. Compare it with your Win setup. If it's the same then
things are looking good. The next thing is to see if the sound
modules are loaded. Issue the command.

cat /proc/modules |less

mii 4224 1 8139too, Live 0xd0dd5000

I have cut this down for brevity. The |less part of the command
will allow you to scroll up and down as the print out can be
rather long. If you see anything like the lines by the asterisks
then it is telling you that the sound card, sound and as an aside
your game port modules are Live (activated). If so far things are
looking good then it's reasonable to assume that there is probably
nothing wrong with your sound setup. There is one more command
you can use on a normal Linux setup but apparently not with
Knoppix.

cat /proc/ioports |less

0170-0177 : ide1
01f0-01f7 : ide0
0200-0207 : es1370 *

  e800-e8ff : 8139too
ef00-ef3f : 0000:00:12.0
  ef00-ef3f : es1370 *

Again this is cut down for brevity. This gives you the address
range of the sound port and should match your Windows settings.
I'm sorry if this looks a bit long winded but in reality it
only takes a minute. You may wish to save this message as a faq
as it is a good way of trouble shooting some hardware stuff
including your etho card.

:-}
