They will have upgrade one day and they won't be using Microsoft
Java since they lost that court case. If the expect me to upgrade
to Win XP i'll tell them to shove it. I use another online bank
for larger transactions and it doesn't seem to care what browser 
i use.

I need it to be print presentable. It's all horses for courses and
i'm sure you don't want to start a thread about spread sheets
verses command line. ;)

I was lucky in that i was about to give up, when i spotted a little
article in a newspaper about Linux open source. I went to a good
book store and bought Linux for Dummies. It came with a cut down
version of R/H 5.2. Although like most newbies i found it difficult
at first i could see it's potential right away so i went out and
bought the full box set. It was easily in my price range. Best
move i have ever made computing wise.

That looks like exactly what i need. When i upload this message i
will pay the site a visit.

I spend a lot of time at the command line but i don't care if i need
the GUI. My motto is "whatever it takes".

I can't pretend i fully understand what your up to but then we probably
have our own priorities.

Even if i don't build from scratch it looks like it will be an 
interesting read.

I went to mirror http://www.slackware.com/getslack/ and had a look
at an FTP download. It had what i assume where iso images. I think
there where 4 or five folders. I got my browser to calculate the
size of one but cut it off at 350 odd mega bites. No way is it 
doable with dialup. I'm a bit tired at the moment but when i have
downloaded Linux From Scratch and had a squint at it i will post
a message under a new thread tomorrow. I have a plan where i may not 
need to wait for a newer computer or wait for a faster internet 
connection.
