Ahhh. That makes it probable that pppd does handle the serial ports
for the graphical dialer.

I don't have setserial installed but mgetty was close at hand. If
setserial is like mgetty then IMHOP they don't control the port.

This would also apply to pppd. The way i look at it all three programs
send strings to the modem and so they are modem controllers. The UART
chip is fairly benign and will only handle a set level of through put.

I've always thought that most of the speed gain done through the
serial is via modem compression.

In what way different? Does it have a different shape plug to the
standard serial port or is the wireing different?

So instead of fax or data you are sending strings to the gps modem
telling it to send data 4800 at whatever compression the software
understands. :)

That's a decision best left to you. You could technically use any
of the server protocols. Provided the end user has the software
to interpret the data stream.

MK>> setserial is a keeper. :-)

I don't have gps. :) I still think that setserail is sending a string
to the gps hardware to send data at 4800.

Although we don't have a problem here other than cost, some people have
no choice but to use a modem. PCI and ISA slots are good for all sorts
of things but not for dialing out. People who buy machines with internal
modems just to save a few dollars should be shot at dawn.
