Hey CHARLES!

That is two more then I know.

CA> If you could list examples I would save the list for future
 CA> reference. :-)

Sure. Still tweaking on some of them and especially now that the 'new'
graphics card is onboard. Is it ever weird but 'out of the box' at least the
setting for 16-bit framebuffers work the same for matroxfb. So far everything
else is different. Also X is having a problem with it except using the Linux
16-bit framebuffer driver. glx sure looks good on here. Obviously I need to
do some heavy-duty playing with this.

What are you interested in? DVD playing? TV stuff? MP3 playing? The whole
shebang?

As for graphics editting go with the gimp. I have yet to see anything better
and/or as inclusive as to formats.

CA> I lean towards configurable applications and am more than
CA> willing to put in the time to learn the terminology used for
 CA> advanced functions.

I think the gimp is like that.

CA> With Lucasfilms and others moving to linux I would hope some

Heh, heh. Yeah that would be nice.

CA> SourcForge pages are hard to decipher with _any_ browser. They
CA> are a perfect example of the old saying "Programmers write
 CA> obfuscated documentation". :-)

Something like that.

CA> As I've mentioned below, a livecd with the necessary software
CA> to locate, login, download, read/reply, and upload FIDO echo
 CA> messages would help.

I've always like the pointing philosophy for that. That way the user learns
something about nodalization if they decide to go it alone. Those are the
easiest people to help, and often don't need any help, to set a node up later.
Even if they don't want nodification it still works out good seeing they are
using more or less the same setup as a node, except less needy.

CA> For access to the bulk of FIDO BBS and echo messagebase zmodem
CA> is the most efficient tool for uploading and downloading.

No it isn't.

 CA> BBBS
CA> and possibly a few others have been testing other protocols but
CA> for the most part it's best to use zmodem right now. Tomorrow I
CA> hope to see FTP up/downloading if FIDO lives that long.

I am doing it that way. Have been for some time now. I haven't used zmodem
for over a decade now. That got ditched with DOS. :-)

Also using binkd but one of my points is purely ftp. It works fantastic.

CA> I'm not disputing the rates of compression, I'm saying the
CA> majority of the BBS don't offer Bzip2 compression (last time I
 CA> checked).

Whatever. They aren't going anywhere fast.

CA> Every conversation about ditching QWK ends with no commitment
 CA> to create a replacement.

Raw pkt's work okay. Offline then can be a garden variety Fido editor such as
msged. That works and doesn't require the sysop from jumping through any extra
hoops to make it work for all concerned.

CA> FIDO users with websites could add a link to other webpages
CA> with FIDO BBS listings on their index pages or create their own
CA> web page of BBS addresses.

Possibly.

CA> Online reading/replying is a bit tedious (usually). I was
CA> referring to an installed editor for the offline reader to
 CA> access.

golded, msged, whatever. That is the simplest scheme all the way around.
Seeing that any Fido node is required to support pkt format then why not go all
the way with it?

CA> A minimal linux would be acceptable if the purpose was to
 CA> access FIDO message bases.

Piece of cake. Just say the word and I'll do one up for you. I can get it to
point off the node here. No zmodem but I think you'd prefer something better.

CA> They tell me that a possum, if cornered, might kill a dog that
 CA> was chasing it. :-)

Right now the dog (ie Fido) is the critter being chased.

Life is good,
Maurice
