================================
On or about 01-07-06 15:13, Maurice Kinal did engage James Bradley

JB> Heya your own self. Still didn't tumble into the sea?
MK> Not yet. Sure have been some high tides as of late. Looks
MK> like the sea might tumble into me first.

As long as you're in a tsunami free zone, I doubt it. <-;

JB> These four megs of screaming RAM... Is that in the pantry, or the
 JB> shed? <LOL>
 MK> Both. They are everywhere!

Somehow, that doesn't surprise me. (READ: Same disease here.) I've been toying
with the idea of NOT scrapping one of those amber coloured dumb terminals, to
install it in the greenhouse. The old Motorola was to be the target for that
cable, but now it might as well be the purpose built terminal->ISA card in
Linux.

JB> I still have to nod my head with a glossy look as I read. I recognize
JB> the techno-babble, but I'm still solidly confused.

MK> Join the club. One interesting thing I heard on the news
MK> about the trade show south of the border is that the stuff
MK> that attracted the most interest - the high definition TV
MK> aside - was technology that takes advantage and supposedly
MK> improves what is already out there. All I could say when
MK> hearing that was, "It's about $&%*in' time!!!"

I think it was recognized a long time ago, that the engineers had met the limit
to the number of buttons their intended consumer could comprehend. Now, they
put less buttons *on,* but more 'sub'menues *in.* /-:

JB> It looks like I am
JB> gravitating to Gentoo at the moment.

MK> That seems to be a popular one. They certainly have all the bases
 MK> covered.

I've barely seen more than a command line, but the docs alone endeared me to
it. Three attempts and counting! Shoot, had I read the install.txt alone when
starting out, it could have encapsulated VOLUMES of research on my part, and
HOURS of my time.

JB> operated the TV tuner (Brooktree), where Windows was waiting for DX5

MK> The Brooktree one worked fantastic here until it died on
MK> me. Especially the 'fbtv -M' option of xawtv. I'd like to
MK> replicate that again but am distracted with other things at
 MK> the moment.

<LOL> Why does that not surprise me? The AGP card in the subject/victim now, is
a Matrox G-400 that I saw you mention a few days ago. Moving the tuner outboard
really seems to solve the interference issue. The PCI card I last Knoppixed on,
still didn't want to tune many channels in, but it SMOKED the W98 software.

JB> and the POTS line was RARELY available.

MK> Right. Here it is nonexistant and has been for many years now. People
MK> around here weren't doing POTS even when it was doable. On

See, I seeked out the crudest, rudest, scruffiest sysop, and became his
Assistant-sysop. Not by choice, so much, as acclimation. Bloody board started
to fill up with local traffic, so much that I had to start my own board so I'd
have somewhere to call into.

Apparently, when 14.4 was considered "High Speed," Alberta was the per-capita
capital world wide. We did have a lot of 28.8k+ boards here, so I suspect we
just outgrew BBS'n once the evil I-net went public.

MK> the plus side, it sure made it easy to convert ye ol' 486
MK> DOS Max BBS over to Linux without causing any grief. That
MK> turned out to be the best move I ever made wrt computers.

I used to extol the EISA bus, as being my best teacher of the platform. Now
that I'm getting a look at this OS, I see where my knowledge could have
expounded. Well, I'm on it *now,* so I guess that's all that counts.
